On May 12, Galeria Artur Fidalgo presents the Bruno Big Jam Session exhibition from 7pm to 10pm. The show will feature a set of approximately thirty unpublished artworks, including paintings and watercolors, made between 2021 and 2022 by the artist. At the opening there will be a performance of the musicians Marcelo da Lua, Edu Neves and Guto Wirtti, who will make a JAM SESSION. During the visitation, the public should bring their headphones to listen to the playlist of Jazz and instrumental music created especially for the exhibition. According to Big:

"The exhibition JAM SESSION presents a new phase of my graphic work, where I venture into the universe of abstract painting. This phase began when I met watercolour ink, I was fascinated by the technique and the surprises that happen during the process of painting on paper.

My creations have always been more towards the figurative side, my first abstract experiments were painting in the street, on panels, always on some big support. But in my work inside the studio I had not yet found myself with abstract art. I was a little tired of the routine of the beginning, middle and end of the usual painting process, I didn't feel challenged. In this new moment, there is no planning, no end, I have to let my sensibility and look guide me and discover the paths I want to follow graphically.

The name Jam Session came when I started to paint without a previous study or a sketch of what I was going to do, just letting the gestures and colours flow on the canvas, improvisation became primordial, seeking harmony in the compositions, just like musicians who get up on a stage to play together and improvise.

I am the band, the canvas my stage, the colours my notes, the gestures the rhythm, suddenly I saw myself making music with paint. Combining the chords of colours, overlapping in layers, making everything round, as they say in the music business".

JAM SESSION

Bruno Big started his career in street art, of which he became an exponent.

Using his own line, which provided the basis for a painting that is immediately perceptible (the main challenge for any image launched in the city), with emphasis on what Georges-Didi Huberman classifies as legible, that is: what is recognised and understood, he conquered walls, façades and gables throughout the city and the world.

From the time when he collaborated with the artist and teacher Thereza Miranda, he kept important foundations that he elaborated, opening new spaces and possibilities in his work.

Shortly before the start of the pandemic, Big began to take an interest in and study Abstractionism in painting, taking advantage of the time of seclusion to launch himself into a new challenge, to reinvent himself (as every artist must do). To do so, he gave up representation and pre-established colour palettes, launching himself into paintings that once started have no preconceived end.

If we think of the division proposed by the historian Heinrich Wölfflin between two great trends in painting: the linear, linked to drawing and representation, and the pictorial, where there is an emphasis on the behaviour of the paint, on the artist's gesture and a form of image creation that will lead to abstract expressionism, we may conclude that it is towards this universe, of greater freedom (and risk), that his work flows, like a jazz musician who, starting from a base, explores infinite possibilities.

In Bruno's studio you can hear Django Reinhardt to Miles Davis and almost always there's a new musical discovery. It is in this spirit of discovery that Big has been working. The artist David Hammons mentions a line by Ornette Coleman that marked him: "Follow the idea of the song, not the song itself."

Moved by open plastic, pictorial and chromatic ideas, Bruno Big produces artworks that are nourished by and relate to Jazz. This is what Matisse, Mondrian and a large number of important artists had done before. More towards Pollock (of whom Coleman was a collector) and less towards Michelangelo, Big has been making this passage that draws attention for its courage at a time when institutions have been almost unanimously interested in strongly narrative artworks.

Bruno, however, knows how to make his own paths, or as Ornette also said

Coleman: "Follow the idea, not the sound."
