Alice Lent
Alice Quaresma was born in Brazil in 1985 and currently lives in New York. Alice has in her curriculum the awards of Aperture Foundation Summer Open (2019), Houston Center for Photography (2019), Caixa Cultural São Paulo's edict (2018), Foam Talent (2014) and PS122 (2009). In 2019 Alice released her first artist book "Playground" with French publisher Editions Bessard and the artist had her first institutional solo exhibition in 2018 at Caixa Cultural São Paulo. Alice obtained her MFA from Pratt Institute in 2009 and has participated in exhibitions and residency programs in the US, Europe and South America since 2006. Part of her artistic practice includes special projects for GU-Global, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Red Bull, Samsung, Hermès, Première Vision, Unseen and Music from Memory. Her work has been published in Foam magazine (Amsterdam), Extra Fotographie in Context (Antwerp ), Edicola (Milan), Il Post (Italy), Lens Culture, De Tijd (Brussels), Unseen (Amsterdam), Volkskrant (Amsterdam), Artspace, IMA (Tokyo) and Serafina (São Paulo).
Alice Quaresma has been experimenting with materials that allow her photographs to be sensorial and playful, expanding the limits of the image. Her work explores the physical aspects of photography, at the same time, the artist continues to use images from her personal photo archive to question the idea of displacement and identity. Alice leaves the flat plane of photographic paper with the use of ink, pencil and tape (among others) on the image. The Brazilian artistic group "Neoconcrete" has been one of the consistent sources of inspiration. Over time Alice has advanced with the production of her work so that marks have gained more presence and photographs have gained space, in installations and street murals. The interest in the use of geometry and lines within the photographic spectrum is to bring out suggestive qualities. The geometry suggests reading possibilities in an inviting way.
