Dio Viana
Diô Viana was born in Santarém, in Pará. He studied painting, drawing and engraving at the Museum of Modern Art-MAM in Rio de Janeiro. He worked as an assistant in the engraving atelier at SESC Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. He attended the printmaking and painting ateliers of the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage. "My work begins through engraving, wood engraving more specifically, followed later by etching and painting. During this process, the conducting wire was engraving and graphic investigation, a procedure that was assimilated by painting, establishing the whole basis of my artistic production. In this process, painting and engraving are soul mates, they interconnect and connect in a single element, they use the same tools searching in the support, canvas, metal or wood, the desired image". The artist is a graduate in MDA-Métier d'art in engraving at the École Supérieur Estienne in Paris, France. He was a professor of engraving at the engraving atelier of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro from 1993 to 1997. Worked as printer for Fayga Ostrower, Marília Rodrigues, Sociedade dos Amigos dos Museus Castro Maia, among others. He curated exhibitions for the French Alliance of Brasilia and the Brazil Mexico Cultural Center in Mexico City, including "Brazilian Contemporary Printmaking" at the Museum of Art of Ciudad Juarez, IAGO, Institudo de Artes Gráficas of Oaxaca and Fundación Sebastien in Mexico City. Diô received the printmaking award at the Arte Pará and Orlando Dasilva printmaking contests, first prize at the 9th salon of the Brazilian drawing and painting grand prize at the salon Realités Nouvelles, in France. He has had individual exhibitions in BACI-USA, in the Museum of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro MNBA, Casa França-Brasil in Rio de Janeiro, Espaço Sergio Porto in Rio de Janeiro, MAB- Museum of Art of Brasilia, Galeria Gravura Brasileira-SP among others.
