Mariana Quito
(Alentejo, Portugal, 1928 - Santos, SP, 2003)
She was born in S. Miguel de Machede, Alentejo. In 1954 she moved to Lisbon, having dedicated herself to ceramic work from that date on. From 1959 to 1964 he studied painting in Paris at the School of Fine Arts. Simultaneously, he studied engraving at the evening course of the Boulevard de Montparnasse School, directed by Jean Delpech. From 1962 to 1963 she was a scholarship holder, in Paris, of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation where she exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Artistes Françaises and the Salon des Beaux-Arts. She was awarded the 1st Prize of the Atelier Souverbi. She was awarded the 1st Prize of the Lefranc Competition and the 1st Honourable Mention of the Municipality of the City of Paris. On her return to Portugal, she continued to dedicate herself to engraving, namely at the Cooperativa dos Gravadores Portugueses, in Lisbon. She was awarded national prizes in the following exhibitions: 1967 Spring Salon; 1968 Autumn Salon; 1968 I Fine Arts Salon of Setúbal; 1st Summer Prize of the Tourism Board of the Costa do Sol.
He held solo exhibitions in Lisbon, Estoril and Luanda. He arrived in Brazil in 1975, settling in São Paulo and continuing his artistic activities and teaching of engraving. The Municipal Museum of Belo Horizonte organized an exhibition of his work which circulated through the main museums of the different states of Brazil. The Cooperative of Portuguese Printmakers has published four of his works. She coordinated, from 2000, in Santos, the engraving course of the Secretariat of Culture, whose studio is now called Ateliê de Gravura Mariana Quito.
She participated in the following Biennials: 1967 Paris; 1968 Pescia; 1969 Liège, Ljubliana, Catania, Madrid, Barcelona; 1972 Rijeka and the II International Biennale of Engraving in Frenchen and is represented in the Cabinet of Prints, National Library of Paris, and in many other national and foreign collections.
