He lives and works in São Paulo.
Painter. Graduated in fine arts at the Guignard School, Belo Horizonte. Lived for many years in Salvador, hence his references to Portuguese tiles. He has had several exhibitions in Brazil as well as in Spain, Portugal, Argentina and his last individual exhibition was in Paris at the Agnes Monplaisir gallery.
The paintings of IURI SARMENTO relate directly to our visual Portuguese heritage and remind us of recurring images that occupy their rightful place in our cultural and affective memory.
His pop-baroque compositions praise excess and saturation. They add to the juxtaposition of unlikely colours, a multitude of different textures and details - bright and opaque, stripes and balls, flowers and geometric figures - forming an exceptional vocabulary of pictorial effects.
IURI SARMENTO belongs to a generation of artists from Bahia who gained national resonance from an efficient strategy promoted by the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia in the 1990s.
His curious figures remind us of the great master Sante Scaldaferri and establish a profound dialogue with popular art from the Northeast of Brazil. At the same time Iuri is a creative and differentiated disciple of valuable artists of the 80s generation such as Leonílson, Beatriz Milhazes and Adriana Varejão.
