Alexandre Freire

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Alexandre lives and develops his artistic work in Florianópolis. He has been producing in the field of art for almost 20 years, developing research on urban social themes and related to intangible heritage through the medium of painting, with influence of graphic arts and precision of architectural features.
In his current research, the artist explores the human relationships inherent to our time, using painting as a language and visual synthesis representations to deal with this contemporary state. Starting from an aesthetic interest in
compositional concepts of modern art, more specifically of the concretist movement. The visual syntheses gain strength in the imagetic constructions, where the symbolism of the boat and its shadow is the compositional interest of the last
series. The boat appears in the most recent works as a representation of the individual that wanders through his social environment in an increasingly liquid way, however, trapped between two fluids: the atmosphere, of unattainable ideals and the sea of infinite possibilities, that tangible, become more and more ephemeral. The construction of unity in the series currently takes place through a kind of anamnesis, of intimate prospection of a previous contemplative state of latent essential truths. In this sense the predominance of representations of horizontal lines is related to an attempt to distribute the "weight" of reality and its centre of gravity. The principle of this artistic investigation arises in the encounter with a short poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen: "When I die I will return to
to seek the instants that I did not live by the sea".
Since 2019 he carries out artistic orientation with Prof Dr Francine Gloudel. He has a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (1998).
