EAV Parque Lage | Summer Courses 2022

Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage publishes the list
of January courses in face-to-face and online formats

A Visual Arts School of Parque Lage (EAV Parque Lage) - which for 45 years has occupied the largest urban forest in the world - will resume classes in person on January 10, 2022, with the busy holiday courses traditionally held during January, February and July. There are a total of There are 20 options, eight face-to-face and 11 online, lasting between one and six weeks and They last from one to six weeks and have themes which fit in with the holiday period.

Nthis season, the teaching coordination is guided by integration of the arts with the forest, presenting proposals that range from natural printing techniques and observation practices to debates about ancestral knowledge. The proposals take art as an important tool for constructing meaning in order to think about the present day in its aesthetic, social and political dimensions.

Closed in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the school migrated its entire course schedule to an online format in the second half of the same year. The remote classes resulted in an expanded audience for EAV, which extended its area of operation beyond Rio de Janeiro, allowing people from various parts of Brazil and the world to join the community of students of the institution.

In view of this expansion, the School opted to maintain the entirely remote format in some teaching proposals, ensuring the exchange of experiences with people from all over the country and deepening the repertoire in Brazilian art. The On-line classes will take place live, through videoconferencing, privileging the interaction between teacher and class. The direction informs that it will not practice the hybrid format, that is, tll courses will follow the same model from beginning to end, being face-to-face or digital.

The complete grid is available on EAV's institutional website (eavparquelage.rj.gov.br) and the courses do not require specific prior knowledge.

"Thinking and making art is a deep dive, a chance to sharpen sensibilities, to perceive the world around us differently. In times of holidays, a quick course can transform the daily life not only of artists, but of all those who are interested in creativity. The possibility of creating art reminds us that we can create other worlds, invent other forms of life," says Yole Mendonça, director of EAV Parque Lage.

>> THE SACRED FOREST: ECOPRINT/ BOTANICAL PRINTING WORKSHOP (FACE-TO-FACE COURSE)

Teacher: Susana Spadaccini

From 17 to 19 January. Mondays and Tuesdays, from 10am to 1pm, and Wednesdays, from 7pm to 10pm

The aim of the workshop is to practice the Ecoprint technique, in addition to learning the basics of mordants, fibres and how to recognise plants in nature with potential for printing. The meetings are also a space in which, through practice, it is possible to address issues such as composition and observation skills.

The method uses the transport of natural tannins from leaves, flowers, seeds and roots to create images printed on paper or fabric with unique results. The aim is to promote a revitalizing sensory experience from the contact with the living and the reconnection of people with nature. In a sustainable way, compositions will be elaborated for numerous purposes, using accessible materials and low toxicity in disposal.

>> WALKING THROUGH PARQUE LAGE - EXHAUSTION OF A PLACE (FACE-TO-FACE COURSE)

Teachers: Bia Amaral and Giodana Holanda

From 11th January to 1st February. Tuesdays, from 2pm to 5pm

The workshop aims at the exhaustion of a place - the Parque Lage. Through a walk, it is intended to inventory the green environment of the forest in contrast with the urban space where the Park is located, on Rua Jardim Botânico.

>> COLLAGE AS A WAY OF THINKING (FACE-TO-FACE COURSE)

Teacher: Pedro Varela

Class 1 - 12 January to 02 February. Wednesdays, from 2pm to 5pm

Class 2 - 12 January to 02 February. Wednesdays, from 7 pm to 10 pm

The course presents collage as an important key to understanding the production of historical and contemporary images. Students will be challenged to approach this language in its formal, technical and conceptual aspects through weekly practical exercises followed by critical monitoring.

>> BODY AND OBJECT (ON-LINE COURSE)

Teacher: Ulisses Carrilho

From 3rd February to 24th February. Thursdays, from 18h to 20h

This course aims to guide a discussion and an investigation into the relationship between body and object in contemporary art. Through different theoretical positions and artistic research, we will investigate how psychoanalysis, economics, literature and philosophy - in intense dialogue with modern and contemporary art artists -, respond to, question and confound the contours of bodies and objects.

>> ARCHAEOLOGY OF EVERYDAY LIFE: THE EVENT AND THE TRIVIAL AS A PRODUCTION TOOL IN ART (ON-LINE COURSE)

Teacher: Fábia Schnoor

11 January to 17 February. Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10am to 12pm

Using references and exercises, the student will be invited to review everyday practices, trying to find out what is commonplace, to perceive the details of gestures, of relationships with objects, and their affective or unexpected meanings. To care for the surroundings and the details in an enlargement of the experience of simplicity. To be alive in the moment and in the environment, as a resource for poetic construction.

What separates or unites us from what we do? How do our artifacts or objects, acts or small choices determine our daily looks or constructions? Starting from this state of attention as a connection with the external and internal environment, not only in the mind and body, but in otherness, in the natural and artificial environment that surrounds us, we move on to exercises that welcome chance, the unexpected and also error as a working tool.

About EAV Parque Lage

The School of Visual Arts was created in 1975 by artist Rubens Gerchman, to replace the Institute of Fine Arts (IBA). Its emergence takes place in the middle of the Cold War in Latin America, during the period of strong censorship and military repression in Brazil. EAV is historically affirmed for its avant-garde character, as a landmark of non-conformity to borders and categories, and regularly proposes questions to society through the appreciation of artistic thought.

EAV Parque Lage is focused primarily on the field of contemporary visual arts, with emphasis on its interdisciplinary and transversal aspects. It also covers other fields of artistic expression (music, dance, cinema, theatre), as well as literature, seen in its relations with visuality. EAV's activities include both artistic practices and their conceptual foundations.

EAV is configured as an open educational centre for the training of artists and professionals in the field of contemporary art. As a national reference, with a consistent image in the art world, it seeks to create internal mechanisms and lines of external action that allow a productive dialogue with the city and with the national and international art circuits. The institution is part of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Some striking examples of the history of Parque Lage are the use of the palace as the seat of government of the town of Alecrim, in Land in Transedirected by Glauber Rocha in 1967; and the exhibition "How Are You, Generation 80?"which brought together 123 young artists of different tendencies in an exhibition celebrating freedom and the end of the military regime. The eclectic-style palace also played host to Shakespearean classic "Sonhos de uma noite de verão" and was the location for Joaquim Pedro de Andrade's Macunaíma.
