MASP PRESENTS AN EXHIBITION OF WORKS BY WOMEN ARTISTS RECENTLY DONATED TO THE MUSEUM

On 27.8.21, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo opens the exhibition The Changing Collections: Recent Donationswhich will be open until February 6, 22. Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director at MASP, and Amanda Carneiro, assistant curator at the institution, the exhibition brings together 13 works by artists incorporated into the museum's collection between 2020 and 2021 and expresses the ongoing work that has been done with the aim of strengthening the presence of women in the collection.

The artists are the following: Carmézia Emiliano, Duhigó Tukano,

Eleonore Koch, Habuba Farah Ricetti, Hulda Guzmán, Ione Saldanha, Jandyra Waters, Karin Lambrecht, Laura Lima, Madalena dos Santos Reinbolt, Maria Auxiliadora da Silva and Wanda Pimentel. All the works will be accompanied by expanded subtitles, with contextualization of the works.

In 2019, the cycle of exhibitions addressed the Women's histories, feminist historiesand the biennium 2021-22, focused on Brazilian histories, was inaugurated with monographic exhibitions that emphasize their role for the language of sculpture in Brazil. The idea is that each of these curatorial cycles leaves its permanent mark on the The Changing Collection through the acquisition of works that increase the presence of artists until recently underrepresented in art history and museums. In 2019, for example, MASP acquired 296 works by 21 contemporary artists, one collective and artists from the 19th century - but there is still much work to be done.

As we know, in most exhibition programming, museum collections, art history books and manuals, women figure disproportionately in relation to men. In 2017, the year dedicated to Histories of sexualitythe feminist artists' collective Guerilla Girls pointed out the disparity between the small presence of female artists compared to the large number of female nudes made by men in the collection on display at MASP. Their presence as authors was 6%. Currently, this number reaches 25%.

The changing collections: recent donations is a small exhibition within a larger group, which can be seen in greater detail in the 2ndo floor of the museum. The variety of themes and approaches in the works on display reveals the plurality of the production of women artists who, bound here by gender, broaden universalizing visions of their creative potential.

The opening coincides with that of Gertrudes Altschul: filigreeabout the German photographer living in Brazil, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director of the institution, and Tomás Toledo, chief curator of the museum. On the same day, MASP also opens Maria Martins: Imagining Desireabout one of the most instigating figures of Brazilian modern art. The curator is Isabella Rjeille, curator at MASP, and the assistant curator is Fernanda Lopes, Casa Roberto Marinho - the Rio de Janeiro institution is the museum's partner in this project.

This year, the museum, guided by the theme of Brazilian Stories, will have exhibitions exclusively by women artists. Also on 27.8.21, the MASP inaugurates the Video Room: Zahy Guajajaracurated by Adriano Pedrosa.
