Antonio Parreiras is honoured with an exhibition of 37 works at MAC Niterói

Opening the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of Antonio Parreiras Museum (MAP), FUNARJ presents the exhibition Antonio Parreiras: Landscapes and Seascapes, from January 7 to 23, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói. Curated by Vanda Klabin, the show brings together 37 canvases made by the painter between 1887 and 1937, and highlights MAP's pioneering role as the first art museum in the state of Rio de Janeiro and the first in Brazil dedicated to the memory of an artist.Recognized as one of Brazil's leading landscape artists, Antonio Diogo da Silva Parreiras was born in Niterói in 1860. In 1884, as a student of the German artist Georg Grimm, he left the National Academy of Fine Arts, joining his master and other colleagues to form the Grimm Group, in the district of Boa Viagem. He made several improvement trips to Europe, painted landscapes, nudes, portraits and pictures of historical themes, being chosen as the greatest Brazilian painter in a vote carried out by the magazine Fon-Fon, in 1925. The following year, widely acclaimed as an artist, he published his autobiography História de um pintor contada por mesmo mesmo. On Parreiras' work, Vanda Klabin highlights the artist's strong relationship with landscape: "His pictorial sensibility and the constant fascination that closely observed nature exerted on his visual vocabulary translate his innovative contribution to the universe of Brazilian art". The painter's unique interpretation of nature can be seen in the main hall of the MAC, in paintings such as "A tarde", sold in 1887 to finance the artist's first study trip to Europe, and "O fogo" (Fire), part of Antonio Parreiras' last exhibition, in 1936, which denounces the burning of Brazilian forests. The exhibition, which is sponsored by the Lazuli Belas Artes Association and the real estate developers União Realizações and Mônaco, also includes two works by the German artist George Grimm, Parreiras' master, and a portrait of the honoured artist, by Numa-Camille Ayrinhac.

Besides being one of the sponsors of the exhibition, Lazuli Belas Artes, a non-profit association, is promoting a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds and collaborate with the recovery and modernization of the Antonio Parreiras Museum, closed for over a decade. Donations can be made through the website https://nova.kickante.com.br/l/revitalizamuseuantonioparreiras. The symbolic counterparts for donors range from thank you e-mails to the engraving of the name on a plaque in the area planned for the expansion of the museum. Through the site, it will be possible to follow the amount collected, how it will be invested and the schedule of the works.

Sanitary ProtocolsAccording to Municipal Decree 14.142/ 2021, it is necessary to present proof of up-to-date vaccination, in printed or digital format, accompanied by a photo document. All sanitary protocols to combat COVID-19 are followed.

The public can collaborate with the reopening and expansion of the Antonio Parreiras Museum, in Niterói, through a crowdfunding campaign

The initial goal of this initiative, promoted by the Lazuli Belas Artes Association, is to raise R$500,000. The museum's 80th anniversary will also be celebrated with an exhibition at the MAC.

About to turn 80, in January 2022, and closed for almost a decade, the Antonio Parreiras Museum, which preserves the work and memory of one of Niterói's and Brazil's greatest artists, may be doubly embraced by locals this year. Lazuli Belas Artes, a non-profit association, has created a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to help recover and modernize the space. Donations can be made through the website https://nova.kickante.com.br/l/revitalizamuseuantonioparreiras. The symbolic counterparts for the donors range from thank you e-mails to the insertion of the names as collaborators in the Museum's website. Through the site, it will be possible to follow the amount collected, how it will be invested and the schedule of the works.

In honor of the anniversary of the museum and the artist, Lazuli Belas Artes and the real estate developers União Realizações and Mônaco sponsor the exhibition Antonio Parreiras: landscapes and seascapes, curated by Vanda Klabin and organized by Funarj. The public will be able to see 37 works by Antonio Parreiras from January 7 to 23, in the main hall of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói (MAC). Visiting hours are from Tuesdays to Sundays, from 10 AM to 6 PM, and the full price of admission is R$ 12.

The restoration and modernization works of the buildings and historic garden of the Antônio Parreiras Museum, a listed architectural and landscaping complex, are scheduled to begin in 2022 and be completed in 2023. According to FUNARJ's Museums Coordination, the work will be divided into two phases: the first will focus on the residence and the new annex; the second will be devoted to the atelier, Vila Olga and the historic garden with an integrated accessibility project. Afterwards, long and short term exhibitions will be promoted in the recovered spaces.

Paula Barbosa, director of operations at União Realizações and responsible for Lazuli Belas Artes, comments on what motivated this cultural rescue movement. "Sometimes private initiative needs to be the spark for great movements involving public power and society. We have just launched a large development on the last available land in Boa Viagem and got involved with the routine of the region. The Antônio Parreiras Museum is part of a cultural corridor and has been closed for nine years. We became aware of the plans to reopen the space and made a point of helping to make it viable and increase this movement. We already have more than R$90,000 in donations and we hope to beat and exceed our goals", Paula explains.

For José Roberto Gifford, president of FUNARJ, the Museum's 80th anniversary represents the beginning of a new phase. "The recovery and modernization project is scheduled to begin in 2022 and we want the population to be part of it, collaborating from now on, donating and getting involved with the stages of this process. At the end of the works, we want to promote a reunion between the public and the Museum, enjoying its spaces and Antonio Parreiras' art".
