MASP OPENS BIÊNIO OF HISTÓRIAS BRASILEIRAS WITHÇÃO DE CONCEIÇÃO DOS BUGRES

The show aims to rescue and reposition the work of an artist who worked in Mato Grosso do Sul and specialised in the production of bugres, statuettes made of wood and soapstoneo

Conceição Freitas da Silva (Povinho de Santiago, Rio Grande do Sul, 1914 - Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, 1984), better known as Conceição dos Bugres, is the artist chosen to open the biennium of the HistBrazilian stories at MASP. The exhibitionConceição dos Bugres: everything is of the nature of the worldbegins on May 14, 2021 and runs until January 30, 2022. Because of the covid-19 pandemic, the museum had to reorganize its schedule of exhibitions. This year, they will be smaller in number and longer induration. Starting in the second semester, this show will coincide with the individual shows of Erika Verzutti and Maria Martins (1894-1973), emphasizing the role of women for the sculptural language in Brazil.

Curated by Amanda Carneiro, assistant curator at the museum, and Fernando Oliva, also a curator at the institution.

The exhibition in question fits into a movement that MASP has been making since 2016 by presenting works by artists who have remained outside the official histories of art with the aim of repositioning them. This is the case, for example, with theexhibitions Agostinho Batista de Freitas (2016), Maria Auxiliadora: daily life, painting and resistancencia (2018) and Djanira: a memória de sua povo (2019).

Conceição was a unique artist in the history of sculpture in Brazil, recognised for her production of the so-called "bugres", works generally carved from wood and covered in beeswax or paraffin and paint, but which can also be made from soapstoneand sandstone.

The exhibitiono willwill bring together 136 works by the artist, most from private collections. There are fewThere are very few of her works in public collections, a fact that also speaks to this process of erasure. Today her work is only to be found in the collections of the Afro Brasil Museum and the Itaú Cultural Institute.

Catalogo

The publicationo bilíngu e and illustrated (R$ 149) willá 240 páginas e será availableIt will be available for sale at the opening of the show, at the MASP physical shop and through the museum's website. The catalogue will include texts by the curators, Amanda Carneiro and Fernando Oliva, Julia Bryan-Wilson, Fernanda Pitta, Isabella Amizo and Naine Terena.
