Galeria Leme presents the group show Entre a estrela e a serpente. Curated by Galciani Neves, the exhibition presents works by more than twenty Brazilian artists from different generations who relate to the genre of "still life". The show is nourished by different reflections on time and contemporary works that present visual symbols associated with this pictorial genre. The exhibition will be on show at Galeria Leme from May 21 to July 16, 2022.
The star and the serpent are, for Neves, agents of temporal contextualisation, which allow approximations between the works on show, while simultaneously differentiating them in their provocations.
"I am thinking of various ways of perceiving time and how it can be a strategy, or a procedure of fictionalization of life, from a chronological ordering, or the creation of historical milestones. But time can also be understood as, in a more critical perspective, a device of imposition and oppression", says the curator.
Another important trigger for the exhibition, of an essayistic nature, is that which is associated almost immediately with visual symbols typical of the pictorial still-life genre: the fleetingness of life, the futility of vanities, the inevitability of death, rotting fruit, the hour-glass establishing the passage and implacability of time, the anatomy of dead animals, the silent and paused life of inanimate matter, the investigation of the expressive power of everyday objects in intimate constitutions of space.
"Many works exhibited bring pictorial and narrative elements, which we associate with the genre of still life. Although an approximation occurs, the dialogue between the works and the idea of this pictorial genre is not peaceful, it is a dialogue that proposes a subversion, that corrupts a Eurocentric vision, by combining socio-cultural elements typical of this territory", states Neves.

About the curator
Galciani Neves was born in Fortaleza (CE). She is a professor (FAAP and Universidade Federal do Ceará) and curator. She has a master's and a doctorate in Communication and Semiotics from PUC-SP. She is the author of the book "Exercícios críticos: gestos e procedimentos de invenção" (Educ - SP and Fapesp, 2016). She develops curatorial projects that draw dialogues between art, literature and environmental issues. She is currently one of the artistic-pedagogical directors of Biblioteca - Floresta.
