The solo exhibition Evandro Carlos Jardim - obras selecionadas presents engravings produced by the artist throughout his career, which exceeds 60 years, as well as four sculptures and new works. The show opens on November 27 and closes on January 22, 2022, at Galeria Leme.
Evandro Carlos Jardim was born in the city of São Paulo in 1935. In 1953, he entered the School of Fine Arts, where he learned the technique of metal engraving with Francesc Domingo Segura. In 1973, he held his first solo exhibition at MASP, where he presented engravings and three-dimensional objects in bronze, iron, aluminum and wood. Two years later, in 1975, he takes part in the 13th São Paulo International Biennial and a year later he exhibits at the 38th Venice Biennial. Parallel to his artistic career, he develops intense teaching activity in several institutions, such as Escola Belas Artes, FAAP and ECA-USP, where he oriented more than a dozen of doctoral theses.
In his studio in Granja Julieta, Evandro builds his sign-figures through drawing, engraving and sculpture. The exercise of the different visual languages he approaches does not follow, at first, a methodical order; but it emerges from the artist's own inner needs: such as the flight path of a bird, which begins in a small sculpture, among trees and wooden clouds, and ends its movement in a drawing, falling or entering a small house. The composition created by these two works represents in the sculpture the space, and in the drawing the plane.
For Evandro, art is an attempt to express the inner world, from the limitations of the outer world, through a language, "What I portray is the way I feel the city. And I feel it through a language, which I try to cultivate: visual language". Thus, in the artist's view, art is a way of relating to the world around us, in which an encounter with the other is the only way to cultivate the multiple ways in which each person feels.
