Idílio | Clarice Gonçalves

Curated by Luiza Mader Paladino, the show, which opens to the public in January 2022, presents works in paintings by the artist from Brasilia, the result of experiments with photography, performance and painting on the emancipated body.

Starting on Thursday , January 13, Referência Galeria de Arte presents the exhibition Idílio, by visual artist Clarice Gonçalves, curated by Luiza Mader Paladino. The exhibition presents the visual artist's most recent works in painting, photography and ceramics, as well as works from previous years that show the trajectory of her production, which, according to the curator, "highlights the radical ecological viewpoint to which the artist resorts, by enabling an organic communion between female figures and nature". The show will be on display until February 28, with visitation from Monday to Friday, from 10am to 7pm, and Saturday, from 10am to 3pm. Referência is located at 202 Norte Bloco B Loja 11 - Subsolo, Brasília-DF. Phone: (55 61) 3963-3501 and Wpp (55 61) 98162-3111.

Idílio brings to the public works made by Clarice Gonçalves from experimentations with performance, photography and painting and that transport the spectator to imaginary universes, where enigmatic creatures inhabit. The exhibition highlights the need to encourage debate from an artistic and conceptual point of view about the importance of women in the art system and their role as a body emancipated from the male gaze. As stated by the curator Luiza Mader Paladino in her text about the exhibition, "It is known that the female body, historically linked to the male gaze, has emancipated itself by originating new knowledge and other forms of representation. This conversion of the authorship of the gaze ensured the self-discovery of an internal gaze, which began to carry out numerous experiments with and on the body.

Much of the production the artist presents in Referência is the result of the pandemic period. "With the social isolation of motherhood intensified by the pandemic, in addition to being a vehicle for cathartic places, painting was my tool of escape and connection. I recurred through the body's memory to moments, places, scenes of welcome, connection with the whole, integration, surrender. In other moments, I performed this escape - salvation. One could call sacred, perhaps, this place between material animality, the elemental trance and the flow of desire", explains the artist.

On this journey, Clarice re-encountered the work of the Cuban artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985). "I was sweetly and deeply absorbed by the pictorial potentiality of her performances, I read between the lines an urgent and still necessary discourse that I reinforce, as an offering, through painting," says Clarice. Luiza Mader points out that Ana Mendieta quoted by Clarice is part of her list of references by evoking the disruptive power of Mendieta's natural contours and connecting them to the ecofeminist practices present in her day-to-day work. "The exhibition is also the fruit of this journey", Clarice adds.

Gallery owner Onice Moraes highlights the importance of Clarice Gonçalves' solo show, the artist's first at Referência. Over the years, Clarice has participated in several group shows at Referência, as well as having held important exhibitions in public institutions, such as in 2019, at the National Museum of the Republic, in 2015 at the Elefante Cultural Centre, and participation in the Havana Biennale in the same year. It is a unique moment for the public to get to know works made during the pandemic period and also works from previous years that showcase a consistent artistic trajectory. "The questions about femininity, maternity, the body, sexuality, together with social and environmental issues, always present in her work, become a great manifesto in favour of life and freedom", states Onice.
