"STILL LIFE" - Lucas Lenci

Photographer Lucas Lenci presents his first solo exhibition of Fine Art photographs at Mario Cohen Gallery. "STILL LIFE", curated by Mario Cohen himself and text by Juan Esteves, brings together 60 photographs taken between 2015 and 2019. The opening of the exhibition will include the launch of the book of the same name (edited by Eder Chiodetto and Fabiana Bruno).

Lucas Lenci photographed taxidermied birds in museums, shops and collectors' houses. The artist noticed that his children were more interested in taxidermied animals than those in zoos, as if the process of taxidermy and the way these animals are presented made them more alive.

From this, the artist built his research divided into three axes: photographs of birds in taxidermy studiosThe high contrast technique between light and shadow, manifesting tenebrism (a technique immortalized by Caravaggio); and photographs of Dioramaswhich present the animals in compositions inspired by their natural habitats.

For Juan Esteves, "In these beautiful images, Lucas Lenci shows us the counterpoint between what is real and what is not. Existent because it is the externalisation of something we need to perceive, not only as a problematisation of something we seek to supplant, but of what we need to represent; a more palpable and ephemeral side of the human being as decadence and ageing and its necessary ascension and rebirth".

About Lucas Lenci

Graduated in photography and Industrial Design, he began his career as an executive producer of commercial, editorial and cultural projects. In 2010, he created FOTOSPOT, pioneer gallery in Brazil to democratize access to photography, and encouraged interest in national photographic production by offering works on online platform. He is Peter Scheier's grandson, and between the years 2009 and 2021 preserved and carried out projects related to the photographic production of his grandfather, currently the collection belongs to the Moreira Salles Institute.

About Mario Cohen Gallery

Opened in Rio in 2002, the gallery established itself as the first Fine Art Photography Gallery of Latin America, aware of the importance of a space for documentation and valorization of Brazilian photography, besides revealing new talents and intermediating the relationship between the artist and the market. In August 2015 it settled in São Paulo. Mario Cohen, owner of the gallery and responsible for the exhibitions and its collection, was part of the curatorship of the Pirelli/Masp photography collection for over a decade, which is among the most respected in the country. In his professional life, he has dedicated himself to the valorization of great brands through art and culture, being responsible - among other projects - for the creation of the Portuguese Language Museum and also of the Ibirapuera Auditorium and its music school.
