A relationship of affection is the motto of the exhibition that brings together Marcello Grassmann and the Mário de Andrade Library, in São Paulo

The exhibition is part of a series of actions to celebrate the work of Marcelo Grassmann, an artist who maintained a close relationship with the BMA, founded in 1925 - the same year he was born

The exhibition "Marcello and the Library - the formation of a young artist" opens on June 30, 2022, at 18h, at the Mário de Andrade Library (BMA), in downtown São Paulo. With free visitation, the show will remain open until August 31, 2022.

Curated by Fabrício Reiner and Nina Kreis, the event will reveal the importance of the Mário de Andrade Library, its contribution to the training of the young graphic artist Marcello Grassmann (1925-2013) and his contemporaries, which reverberates to the present day.

Rare works and books will be presented - which were a reference in the artist's production, belonging to the collections of the Mário de Andrade Library and the Núcleo de Estudos Marcello Grassmann - a non-profit institution that cares for, preserves and maintains the work of the artist born in São Simão, in the interior of the state of São Paulo.

At the opening of the exhibition, there will be the launch of the "Book of Affections", the first publication of the Nucleus with authorship of Leon Kossovitch, Denis Bruza Molino and Ana Godoy, published in 2019 and not yet officially launched due to the coronavirus pandemic. The publication fosters a complementary itinerary, transforming the relationship of the public before the life and work of the artist visiting the show.

As part of the exhibition's programme, there will also be a panel discussion, on 20 July 2022, with curator Fabrício Reiner, visual artists Néia Ferreira Martins and Helena Freddi, mediated by curator Leandro Muniz (SELECT magazine contributor and assistant curator at MASP).

Praising the production
The exhibition is part of a set of actions to celebrate the work of Marcelo Grassmann. One of them happened in 2021, the 1st Marcello Grassmann Award - graphic arts - national call for proposals which contemplated three artists, Elisa Arruda, Lucas Siqueira and Wander Rocha, who had projects analyzed and selected by artistic jurors, Maria Bonomi, Luise Weiss and Mayra Laudanna. The result was presented at the XXIX Marcello Grassmann Cultural Week, which took place between September 23 and October 2, 2021 at the Casa de Cultura Marcelo Grassmann, in São Simão, in the interior of São Paulo. Organised by the Ministry of Tourism, the Special Secretariat of Culture and the São Paulo State Government, through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, and produced by the Marcello Grassmann Study Centre.

About Núcleo de Estudos Marcello Grassmann
It is a non-profit institution, created in 2017, aims to preserve the memory of graphic artist Marcello Grassmann (1925-2013), promote the research of his work through study tables, debates, recording of interviews, as well as the dissemination of his collection through its website and digital channels, book publications and exhibitions fulfilling an important role to the Brazilian graphic arts.

Idealized by the recording artist Ana Elisa (Zizi) Baptista (companion of the artist for 17 years), accompanied by Nina Kreis (Marcello's apprentice) and the musician Paulo Grassmann (son of the artist), they founded the space, which also counts with the participation of the cultural producer Paula Miranda and the art educator Marili Serafini, located in the centre of São Paulo.

Marcello Grassmann is recognised as one of the leading figures of the graphic arts in Brazil, as exemplified by the many awards he has received in over 60 years of activity dedicated to engraving and drawing. His work is present in Brazilian and international museums and private collections, a portion of which remained the property of the artist throughout his life.

This collection was bequeathed to Zizi Baptista, who decided not only to preserve it, but also to enlarge it through acquisitions totaling approximately 2000 works, including also carvings, dies, tools and personal objects, in addition to the artist's private library and books with references to him and his generation.

About the Mário de Andrade Library
It is one of the most important research libraries in the country. Founded in 1925 as the Municipal Library of São Paulo, it is the largest public library in the city and the second largest public library in Brazil, second only to the National Library. It was opened in 1926, at 7 de Abril Street, with an initial collection formed by works that were held by the São Paulo City Council, in whose building the Library used to operate. In 1937, it incorporated the Public Library of the State and, since then, important acquisitions of books, many of them rare and special, enriched its collection. The growth of its collection and services led the library to move to its current building, located on Consolação Street. Inaugurated in 1942, under Mayor Prestes Maia's administration and with Rubens Borba de Moraes as Library Director, the new building, designed by the French architect Jacques Pilon, is considered a Modern architecture landmark in São Paulo.
