NEW FAAP MAB EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS MODERNISM PRESENT

IN PHOTOGRAPHY, FILM AND GRAPHIC ARTS

With free entrance, the exhibition can be visited from 9 May

MAB FAAP opens next May the 9th May the exhibition Crossed Modernitiescurated by researcher Rubens Fernandes Junior. The free exhibition sheds light on three languages - photography, cinema and graphic arts - that were not considered during the 1922 Week of Modern Art, an aesthetic event that marked a major breakthrough in Brazilian art.

"We want to bring to the discussion that the Week of Modern Art, in 1922, was crossed by other modernities, which came before and after the event. A retrospective look is enough for us to understand that other languages, associated with the machine world, were also developing and experimenting with new possibilities of production and creation," explains the curator, also director of the Communication area of FAAP University Center.

In the Photographs section, the public will be able to see, for example, portraits of great names who were part of the Week of Modern Art, either as artists, such as Mario and Oswald de Andrade, or as patrons, such as Olivia Penteado and her family. There will also be photos by Flavio de Carvalho, who was not present at the event, but was deeply involved with the Modernists.

According to the exhibition's curator, there was a late modernity in Brazilian photography, starting in the late 1940s, through Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante. As a reference, the exhibition will bring productions by photographers such as Thomaz Farkas, German Lorca, Benedito Junqueira Duarte, Jean Manzon, Otto Stupakoff, Bob Wolfenson, J.R Duran and Klaus Mitteldorf, all belonging to the MAB FAAP collection.

In Cinema and Graphic Arts, it will be possible to appreciate an unpublished film, domestic and from that time, made by the Silva Prado family, who financially supported the Week of Modern Art, besides posters of Brazilian cinema that belong to FAAP's collection.

The section will show, for example, posters from the initial period of cinema, in the 1920s and 1930s; from Vera Cruz, in the 1950s; from Cinema Novo and, finally, from Tropicália, in the 1960s and early 1970s. German and Russian posters from the 1920s and 1930s, which are also a reference of modernity for Brazil, will be on display.

In another space, the public will see seven film scores, from the curator's archive, which refer to a modern iconography, such as the film São Paulo, A Sinfonia da Metrópole (1929), as well as a showcase with three issues of the São Paulo photomontage magazine, which circulated in 1936.

Modernidades Atravessadas will connect with the exhibition Modernos, on show at MAB FAAP since March, with two main sections: Before 1922 and After 1922.

Works by Antônio Parreiras, Eliseu Visconti, Estevão Silva, Georg Grimm and João Batista Castagneto are examples that can be seen in the section Before 1922. In the second, the public can check works by up to 121 artists, such as O Homem das Setes Cores, by Anita Malfatti, among others.

About MAB FAAP

Since it first opened its doors 60 years ago with the exhibition "Baroque in Brazil", the Museum of Brazilian Art of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP) has been committed to encouraging and disseminating Brazilian art. In addition to its own collection which has around 3,000 works of art from the end of the 19th century, over the past few years it has housed landmark exhibitions for the history of the country's culture, such as the exhibition "Toyota - The Rhythm of Space" awarded by APCA in 2018. In 2015, the MAB-Moda Collection was created, which brings together garments, dolls and accessories of contemporary Brazilian designers, strengthening the link between the museum and fashion, which since 1989 has been present through parades and exhibitions linked to the theme. It is worth noting that in addition to researching and organizing exhibitions on themes pertinent to the Brazilian visual arts, the MAB has incorporated the presentation of international art shows with themes of general interest that bring meaningful experiences to the public and broaden the understanding of artistic and cultural making.
