José Antonio de Lima presents around 40 works in his solo show "Orgânicos

José Antonio de Lima's taste for the use of different materials can be seen in "Orgânicos", an exhibition that brings together paintings, drawings and objects in a variety of techniques and molded, stitched and oxidized materials, including collages, fabrics, iron powder, oil paint, nankeen and wires. The abstract language used by the artist passes from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional plane, in works of earthy and ferrous colours and in black and white (his most recent works) that point to the synthesis of the poetic image developed by him for almost 30 years. The opening takes place on January 20, at the Centro Cultural Correios RJ, and is co-curated by Edson Cardoso and Cota Azevedo.

"It is important to highlight the mastery with which the artist deals with the compositions of planes and forms within an organic perspective. "The experimental character of the constructions of the works can be observed throughout the set presented," says Edson Cardoso, one of the curators.

Organic: nature on the move

The composition of forms in space gains an additional compass in the work of José Antonio de Lima. The artist, who has been dealing with experimental freedom for over 30 years, discovers in gesture and in the different materials an abstract and organic artistic discursive construction. The process begins with a restless desire to produce art, still in his childhood in the countryside of Minas Gerais, MG and Paraná, PR. And whether through paper, two-dimensional canvas or expanding, gaining larger contours, going into the physical field of installation objects, there is a memorial of the natural matter of mundane things. The works are not titled, for in this way the artist seeks the free variations of the compositions, which are always an open field for exploration. A dance of colours and light still seems to pace the dance of lines, scribbles, tears and collages. By observing the technique of the works more closely, one realises that even when we try to grasp a direct conceptual meaning of the image, something escapes, and soon becomes another aspect, another symbolic sense. Another fundamental visual mark in this exhibition "Orgânicos" is the corporeality of the works, fabrics that look like fur, incisions in canvases that refer to the living architecture of the earth and the city. The "place" of the work is never defined, although José Antonio seems to be able to capture something of the real. The human, the animal, the street, the map, the atmospheric environment, everything can almost be condensed in the volumes of the forms, superimposed, and for other instants, empty, in the visual whole presented. The gaze never stops resting on the certainty on terra firma, it navigates in the dimension of the sensitive. After all, "Navigating is necessary. Living is not necessary" - as the famous Roman phrase handed down through the centuries would say. And in this instant it is paraphrased as an analysis of the transitoriness of the artist's organic art.
