Exhibition "ORÍ" | Ramo

"ORI": EXHIBITION BY THE ARTIST RAMO OCCUPIES SESC SÃO CAETANO FROM 25 NOVEMBER

 

 

"Orí is an exercise in solitude amidst dystopia. A glimpse of the head that creates, weaving networks of affection, neural, cognitive and narrative. Nets that elegantly sway through urban and rural territories. Orí is a horizon that resides on the margin, proposing new centres, discussing the urbe in the gap of census and dissensus".

 

This is how the artist Roger Ramos, better known as Ramo, defines his inspiration for this new exhibition that brings together, at Sesc São Caetano, 17 works, including paintings, ceramics, sculptures and installations, from 25 November 2021 until 31 March 2022.

 

The artist, who was born in Mauá, a city in the ABC region of São Paulo, has already had his work exhibited in spaces such as the Rio Art Museum, Museu da Diversidade Sexual - SP and Funarte. With this exhibition he rediscovers the clay as a means to model and remodel ancestral and contemporary meanings, creating a sample of this unfolding of his identity research having as central theme the verb "to build" within the production of erudite and popular art materialized in platforms such as ceramics, wood, drawings and performances, in addition to digital media such as photography and video art and interventions in the city itself, such as murals, pixo and graffiti.

 

"My work deals with techniques and materials common to civic construction. Throughout the pandemic I incorporated ceramics and wood carving as new possibilities, while seeking a deeper connection with the legacy of my elders, experts in the act of creating, gestating what we call "HOME" and the land itself. In this exhibition, specifically thought for Sesc São Caetano, my challenge was to understand how this work could enter the digital medium and create relationships of affection and empathy with the public of the unit. Covid-19 presented us with this impasse and each one, within its own time, resources and dynamics, developed ways of relating. This interests me a lot, this virtual identity within my investigative process. And if during the pandemic we interacted with these technological boxes called mobile phones and computers, I present this exhibition inside a wooden box, in which each visitor will have individual access to the works," says Ramo, who adds: "Mestre Gildásio always told me: in capoeira, a step backwards is also a blow. I use this proverb as a mantra to deal with the consequences caused by Covid-19 and the whole political and social context we are facing in the country.

 

The work will be developed as Site Specific (work developed especially for the needs, potential and vulnerabilities of the host space), thus building a temporary dialogue with the space of Sesc São Caetano, its territory and its public, and proposing a new form of displacement and a new transit in space with multiple symbolic layers and interaction.

 

Lorraine Mendes, the curator of the exhibition, states that the meanings of Orí cross time and the cultural crossings that mark our ground. For her, the exhibition holds the place of meaning and of Ramo's search from his awareness of being, also, heir and part of a long path that, in this sense, is to build and constitute the individual without disassociating him from the relationships with what surrounds him: to perceive and be true to himself, understanding himself as part of the whole. The works presented are the result - in visuality, body and matter - of the head directed to an inheritance-present that guides desires, visions and futures.
