MASP PRESENTS VIDEO ROOM: TAMAR GUIMARÃES

Exhibition shows works by the artist for the first time in Brazil

The MASP - Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, presents, from May 6 to June 19, 2022, the exhibition Video Room: Tamar Guimarãesin the 2nd basement of the institution. Curated by Laura Cosendey, assistant curator of MASP, the show brings together Canoes (2010) e The Rehearsal (2018), exhibited in dialogue for the first time in Brazil. The exhibition is part of the program of the MASP Video Room, which proposes an in-depth study of audiovisual productions in the field of artistic production.

Tamar Guimarães (Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, 1967) lives and works between Brazil and Denmark. Her work dialogues strongly with the language of the cinema, with the strong presence of the script and the narrative, sometimes making use of other media, such as slide projections, photographs and various objects. The dialogues in his works are transposed by themes of history and social relations in Brazil, with situations that denaturalize the look of certain narratives.

The exhibition presents side by side Canoes (2010) e The Rehearsal (2018), for curator Laura Cosendey, "the works connect in terms of methodology, through the engagement of the performers and the construction of the script, and reflect on the transformations in the political and social context in Brazil in the last decade".

In Canoes, a cocktail party is staged at Casa das Canoas, in Rio de Janeiro - a residence designed by Oscar Niemeyer for himself in the early 1950s, considered a symbol of modernism. The narrative is constructed from the preparation of the event to fragments of the dialogues between the guests, played by actors and non-actors, including well-known figures from the Brazilian artistic and intellectual scene, such as psychoanalyst Suely Rolnik. The scene highlights the social distance between guests and event staff.

The Film The Essay presents a director working on a theatrical montage based on the text of Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas, by Machado de Assis, to be staged in an art institution, crossing racial and gender relations in Brazil, which echo the original text. The work was specially commissioned for the 33rd São Paulo Biennale Afinidades afetivas, in 2018, and filmed in its pavilion.
