Superheated" exhibition by Sofia Caesar

On May 19, Cavalo is pleased to present 'Superaquecidas' by Sofia Caesar, her first solo show at the gallery's space in Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition presents a body of work, never before shown in Brazil and produced this year by the Rio de Janeiro-based artist who lives in Belgium, that expands her interest in the associations between the body and technology, and more specifically in precarious work relations and the financialization of leisure.

The title of the exhibition is taken from a videoinstallation made by Sofia together with choreographers living in Rio de Janeiro. From an initial proposal of the artist, four collaborators idealize home office situations in which both machine and body reach a state of exhaustion by excessive heat. 'Our computers were made to work well in the climatic conditions of the Silicon Valley, so what is being universalized as a new way of working is actually a very specific one' evaluates Sofia. The videos, shown simultaneously, are complemented by small inclined benches that invite the audience to learn unusual ways of sitting.

The photo series 'Sittings' comically portrays the artist in ten absurd working postures. Like a disastrous office yoga tutorial, the artist's poses with her laptop, crammed desk, bookshelf and swivel chair are named one by one, in situations like 'soft', 'perch' and 'boat'. 'Sittings' also pays attention to issues of time, which is how sessions are named.

A graduate in dance from Faculdade Angel Vianna, Sofia Caesar's research also expands this interest in the series of works 'Baile das obsoletas' (The obsolete dance), in which the artist uses parts of discarded mobile phones, such as broken screens, unused batteries, plastic, cellulose and copper wires, to form mobiles that rotate on their own axis silently through the gallery space. The devices, which are increasingly extensions of our bodies, appear repeatedly in the exhibition and point to the dependence and fragility of the systems we have built.
