Capixaba of Syrian origin, Hilal Sami Hilal began in the 1970s, drawing and watercolour to then decide to deepen in Japanese techniques of making paper. From there, with a trip to Japan, his research intensified, resulting in a second trip to that country in the late 1980s.
By crossing cultural influences between East and West, between modern Western tradition and ancient Islamic art, his "lace" was born.
Made with an exclusive material, created with cellulose taken from cotton rags and mixed with pigments, resin and iron and aluminium powder, the lace favours the gestural strength of the artist, who thus builds the canvas from intersecting lines, from colours that reveal themselves in the mixture of materials and from the sensation of absence generated by the blank spaces. The work, placed at a short distance from the wall, benefits from the projected shadows, creating a virtual lacy. Some of his works are made only with acrylic resin, creating the same visual effect. He was part of the Panorama of Brazilian Art, MAM/SP, in 1998. In 2007/2008 he had a major exhibition of his work at Museu da Vale, Vitória, Espírito Santo, curated by Paulo Herkenhoff.
