ALMA DA RUA SCREENINGS AWARD-WINNING FILM "URBAN ART

Exhibition takes place on 15/01, from 18h

The feature film "The Urban Art" is an independent documentary of approximately 70 minutes, which began to be made in 2004. It has a historical record of images and interviews from that time, as well as archive images that were obtained through a thorough research of books and museum archives. The film was one of the RioFilme winners and selected for the festivals Street Art Movie Fest (France) and the International Biennial of Sound Cinema.

In recent years, to cover the subject in a global context, the team has been to New York, Berlin and Havana, interviewing its main artists, precursors acting on the world stage, as well as artists from other parts of the world, such as Australia and Chile.

Established artists in the world of art, such as Os Gêmeos, told their experiences, references and how they see the activities and interferences that happen in public spaces, and what the differences are between the art that happens in the urban environment and the art produced in studios.

In the 20th century, more precisely at the end of the 1960s, young people from the New York Bronx (USA) re-established graffiti using spray paint. The streets would become the ideal setting for the emergence of a new movement, where political and social ideologies and desires could be expressed. Thus, the practice became widespread throughout the world, under different contexts, types and styles, consolidating itself as a new form of expression. Today, graffiti occupies an essential place in the visual arts circuit, frequenting spaces previously restricted to other schools. In large urban centres, graffiti is no longer just a manifestation of resistance or counterculture, but has become a rich artistic activity and an important means of communication based on free expression.

Some of the artists featured in the feature film The Urban Art are; Os Gêmeos, Binho Ribeiro, Zezão, Tinho, Smael, Dalm, Daze, Tomaz Vianna, Chivitz, Marcelo MENT, Carlos Esquivel, Marcelo ECO, among others.

Created in 2016, The Soul of the Street has already held more than 80 exhibitions. 90% of the exhibitions are held with artists who are active on the streets, but not only on the streets of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Inside the gallery, works by some of the most important street art artists in the country, such as Binho Ribeiro himself, EDMX, Enivo, Onesto, Pato, Cris Rodrigues, Mari Pavanelli and Gatuno, as well as a special space that supports the graffiti movement in Brazil, with works by Dino and Cripta Djan. "The gallery is democratic," explains Tito Bertolucci, owner and curator of Alma Da Rua.
