Galeria Mercedes Viegas presents a group exhibition bringing together works by the artists Adalberto Mecarelli, Almandrade and Robert Kelly. The group show opens today, June 17, and will remain open to the public until July 5.
Adalberto Mecarelli was born in Italy in 1946, but has lived and worked in Paris for 50 years. A sculptor with an abstract constructive matrix who is noted for his use of light and shadow as raw materials, Mecarelli has presented his work in various public spaces in France, Italy and Germany since the 1960s.
Born in Bahia in 1953, Almandrade is an artist, architect, master in urban design, poet and professor of art theory in the art workshops of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia and Palacete das Artes. He has participated in various collective exhibitions, among them: XII, XIII and XVI Bienal de São Paulo. His drawings and paintings use geometric forms, as well as words or just letters. Almandrade lives and works in Salvador.
Robert Kelly was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1956 and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, Cambridge in 1978. Inspired by the De Stijl movement, Kazimir Malevich and Mondrian, Kelly is an abstract matrix painter who also cites the influence of artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Hans Arp.
Kelly began his artistic career as a photographer, but since 1982 he has devoted himself solely to painting. The artist lives and works in New York.
