COURSE | LECTURE FASHION AND CINEMA: DIALOGUES THROUGH COSTUME DESIGN

ABOUT THE COURSE

Artistic and symbolic languages of modernity, Fashion and cinema not only express the political and cultural reality of an era, but also register in the clothing or moving images of the film the social organization of appearance; through the form of the costume the perception of the passage of time, of stylistic changes, of desires, dreams, utopias and the formation of the imaginary of society is constructed.

From films of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries - which will be commented in class - the representation of Fashion aesthetics by characterization and composition of costumes in the seventh art, in the perspectives of the history of Fashion, cinema, philosophy, sociology and literature, in works by costume designers such as Edith Head, Adrian, Travilla, Orry-Kelly Irene Sharaff, Cecil Beaton, Ann Roth, Milena Canonero, John Mollo, Michale Kaplan, Colleen Atwood, Sandy Powell and Patricia Field, and the couturiers and designers Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier and Yohji Yamamoto.

COURSE | PASSAGES TO THE CONTEMPORARY: FOUR ARTISTS

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is an introduction to contemporary art through four case studies. In each of the classes, we will examine the work and the trajectory of a fundamental artist for the languages of the current scenario of visual arts, paying attention to the specificities of their aesthetic, social and political concerns. We will also pay attention to the context in which each of these creators built their career, understanding how they responded to and inserted themselves into crucial moments in the history of 20th century art.

 

OPEN LESSON | VISUAL ARTS AND CINEMA: HÉLIO OITICICA

ABOUT THE COURSE

Visual arts and cinema maintain a dialogue with influences and mixtures between artistic productions. In this open class we will look 'side by side' at the artist's experimental film Hélio Oiticica Agrippina is Rome-Manhattan (1972) and a film about Oiticica, the H.O (1979) by filmmaker Ivan Cardoso, in which Oiticica's plastic 'invention' is embraced in the film.

COURSE | LATIN AMERICAN PHOTOGRIDS

From 28.10 to 11.11.2021

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course arose from the need to question Eurocentric feminisms, the hegemony of photographic dissemination focused only on this axis and the urgency to cast a look at contemporary photography produced in Latin America.

The intention is to contribute to broadening our visual repertoires in the Latin American territory through the dissemination of the work of women photographers.

PROGRAM:

28.10 - Class 1: What is Latin America? What is Latin American photography? What concepts are linked to it? Why is it necessary to cut a gender perspective on the subject? Brief introduction and discussion on the subject and presentation of the production of female photographers from South America, with emphasis on Brazil.

04.11 - Class 2: Latin American images: continuation of the presentation of the production of photographers from South America.

11.11 - Class 3: Latin American images: photographic collectives and platforms and looks at the production of female photographers from Central and North America (Mexico).

 

COURSE | WHY DO WE DESTROY IMAGES? THE HISTORICAL DIMENSION OF ICONOCLASM AND ITS IMPACTS ON CONTEMPORANEITY

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course aims to give a historical dimension to iconoclasm so that we can better understand the different contemporary iconoclastic phenomena. We will make a historical overview of iconoclasm from Antiquity, through the Middle Ages, the French Revolution to the present day. We will analyse the iconoclastic processes as results of religious, political or ideological conflicts.

"Psychoanalysis and Art: How to write a body? Leon Ferrari" aims to think the aesthetic dimension from the work of artists who have worked on the writing of a body including an ethic that touches both a poetic and political perspective, and psychoanalysis can offer us clues of the subject from a critical reflection.

| SEMIOTICS AND FASHIONCOURSE

ABOUT THE COURSE

Fashion is not just about covering the body, dressing up is a way of communicating and creating connections. From the old t-shirt to the Haute Couture dress, clothes are signs that we use to show who we are and what we want to be.

One way to better understand what and how clothes mean is with Semiotics, the science that studies signs. With it we can understand how signs are created, used and how they work.

The course will present the main concepts of Semiotics and how we can use them to better understand Fashion.

COURSE | VISUAL ARTS AND CINEMA: DIALOGUES THROUGH THE FEMININE

ABOUT THE COURSE

Visual arts and cinema maintain a fertile dialogue, with influences and mixtures between artistic productions. The interpretation of a film can be enriched by forms and themes from other arts and vice versa. This course aims to bring films from contemporary cinema closer to themes from the visual arts, in order to contribute to looking at, analysing and interpreting cinematographic and visual works.

Starting with one film per class and the female characters we will see how films dialogue with visual arts forms.

 

COURSE | BETWEEN FOLDS AND CUTS: THE ARTIST'S BOOK AND ITS (UN)LIMITS

ABOUT THE COURSE

What is an artist's book? What dialogues can be drawn between artistic languages with the book as a support? The intersection between literature and art is not new today; there have been centuries of meetings and mismatches.

This course will present this path and its possible unfoldings within contemporary art, presenting research, productions of the universe of artist books with theoretical and practical reflections from the relationship between folds and cuts of a flat surface as space-time of the narrative. Through practices, the student will build unusual books while reflecting on important concepts in contemporaneity.

COURSE | FASHION THEORY STUDY GROUP

ABOUT THE GROUP

This study group aims at the guided reading, analysis and conceptualization of the main publications* of the recent Fashion theory in the areas of human sciences.

The main idea of the study group is to guide the student-researcher, or just those interested, in reading the concepts and key ideas of the latest publications in the area, and that have importance for the understanding of Fashion as a social, historical and aesthetic phenomenon in the contemporary world.
