Exhibition "A Ira Ria

Raquel Arnaud Gallery presents new exhibition by artist Carlos Nunes "a ira ria

The exhibition includes works developed in the last two years, which reflect on current issues and deal with the abstraction of the word in a scenario of multiple narratives.

In "a ira ria", Carlos Nunes shows recent works, produced in the last two years. The artist comments that the works were made in the heat of the moment, felt in the stomach and put out. At some moments they suggest screams, and at others, silencing. One of the questions of his current research is the malleability and capacity of abstraction of words, in their multiple contexts, in a world dominated by narratives. The use of palindromes - words or phrases where the beginning can be the end, and the end, the beginning; and their reading, an eternal coming and going, always with the same sense - serves as the matrix of the exhibition.

"OSSO", "ATORREDADERROTA" and "RIR, REVER, REVIVER" were born as questions or claims and gained public space before gaining the "status" of art. In this process, the artist developed an itinerant project, called "ATORREDADERROTA", which traveled through some cities on the route between São Paulo and Brasília, setting up a structure made of wood and iron plates with the palindrome inscribed in an empty form. Another work of his research can be seen in the series "RIR, REVER, REVIVER", a kind of manifesto composed of wooden plates that serve as matrixes for serigraphs with these three verbs.

The exhibition occupies the two floors of the gallery, with different proposals for each one. The ground floor of the gallery has a very specific time and space, like the time of a film whose title is the palindrome that gives the exhibition its name: "a ira ria". The upper floor is "OCO", a space dilated by the use of this word on all the walls and which simultaneously suggests a void in this room. In the series "OCO", the procedure is to fill the space of the sheet leaving only the emptiness of the word-palindrome. These are drawings made in different places, with different materials and with the use of time and space as work matter and theme. Within parallelisms and dialogues about the structure of words and the silencing of narratives, the work "Diary" consists of the accumulation of newspaper news that have been transformed into "stones" or "meteors", as if they had fallen on our heads or were floating in this OCO space.
