"Colonial Oasis"
Kubik, Porto/São Paulo
27/11/2021 - 29/01/2022

The concept of "oasis civilization" is introduced by Mario Pedrosa justifying Brasília as a horizon
to a supposed absence of history, in which the instantaneous creation of a social structure would burn
stages of development and organic cultural formulation, making the modern city
understood as compensation and suppression of the historical gaps of the new world.
The Oasis would then emerge as the vision of a prosperity emanating from an artificially produced
modernity, aiming to overcome a supposed demographic, cultural and historical void in the
interior of Brazil. This idyllic vision also does justice to the phenomenon of collective appropriation of the architectural signs
of this modernity, which among its various meanings we could cite a cult of
a particular idea of prosperity and development.
On the other hand, the Oasis harks back to the mirage and colonial delirium analogous to the first invasions in the
interior of Portuguese America, which glimpsed the great
lagoon of Eupana, mythologically held to be a source of auriferous riches in the midst of the continental "void". In such a way, the colonial stigma of the Oasis
, of a providing space in the midst of an archaic wilderness, is a background figure in
which institutes an imaginary of modernity that resonates until today in the contradictory fabrications of
Brazil.

Bio:
Lives and works in Anápolis, Goiás. Visual artist, architect and urban planner graduated from the University
Estadual de Goiás (UEG), he participated in exhibitions such as the XII Bienal Internacional de Arquitetura de
São Paulo at the Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP) and the exhibition "Vaivém" at the Centro Cultural Banco
do Brasil (CCBB). More recently he participated in the 7th edition of EDP nas Artes, at Tomie
Ohtake Institute and was selected for Artistic Residency at Delfina Foundation in 2022.
Revisiting a series of historical documents, such as publications, exhibition catalogues and
cartographic representations, the artist has been elaborating a series of maps investigating the
construction of the idea of a "modern Brazil" as a contradictory update of an imaginary
colonial. At the same time, his work has been dedicated to the tensions existing in the appropriation and
reinvention of the icons of modern architecture by different unofficial architectures within
Brazil.
