Zipper Gallery is pleased to welcome artist Angela Od again, now in the Zip'Up show with the solo show "She had no intention of pleasing". Angela had already exhibited at the gallery in 2018, in the Artists Without Gallery Salon, in which she was awarded a prize. With critical text by Bruna Costa, the artist's new exhibition opens on 10 May.

Angela Od gathers a selection of her production based on the role relegated to women by Catholicism. Thus, figures taken from bestiaries, paintings and illuminations, religious symbolisms, demons, mermaids and beasts that join the female characters who find themselves in a heroic epic of resistance. All this narrative is told in embroidery in which the artist uses threads, one over the other, to obtain the result of the painting, seeking an approximation between the universes of embroidery and the pictorial.

The show "She had no intention of pleasing" is on show at Zipper Galeria until June 11.

Idealized in 2011, a year after the creation of Zipper Gallery, the Zip'Up program is an experimental project aimed to receive new artists, emerging names not represented by São Paulo galleries. The aim is to maintain openness to varied investigations and approaches, and to enable the exchange of experience between artists, independent curators and the public, giving visibility to imminent or maturing talents. In a permanent process, the Zipper receives, selects, guides, and hosts exhibition projects, which in recent years have totaled more than fifty exhibitions and approximately 70 artists and 30 curators who have occupied the gallery's upper room.

About the artist

Angela Od (Rio de Janeiro, 1973) attended the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (RJ) from 2011 to 2017 after working in computer graphics. Since then, she has followed several practical and theoretical artistic trainings. The contact with embroidery emerged in her childhood in a boarding school with a strict Catholic education system and hours of daily practice in embroidery workshops. In 2019, she held her first solo exhibitions: "Final Fantasy" and "Lavender is the Freest Colour". In 2018, she was awarded the prizes: Acquisition of the 43rd SARP and 9th Salon of Artists without Gallery (SP). Major group exhibitions include: 6th Biennial of Bolivia (2016), Transbordar: transgressions of art in embroidery, 2020, Sesc Pinheiros (São Paulo); 4 o Abre Alas, 2018, at Galeria Gentil Carioca (Rio de Janeiro); 43 o SARP - Salão de Arte de Ribeirão Preto, 2018, (Ribeirão Preto, SP).

Bruna Costa is an art historian, independent curator and teacher. She works in art projects and exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the co-curatorship of "1º Salão Vermelho de Artes Degeneradas" at Atelier Sanitário (2020), curatorial assistance in "Hábito-Habitante" (2021), "Campo" (2019) and "Arte Naïf: nenhuma museu a menos" (2019) at EAV Parque Lage and co-curatorship in "A título precário" at Centro Cultural Phábrika (2018). She graduated in Art History at EBA/UFRJ (2017) with a sandwich period at Sapienza University of Rome Italy (2015-2016). She is doing her master's at PPGAV/EBA/UFRJ with research on colour and carioca material culture in Hélio Oiticica. She is an Art History and Tourism tutor at Consórcio CEDERJ and collaborator at artist Ernesto Neto's studio since 2020. She teaches free courses and publishes texts in cultural periodicals.
