Casanova is pleased to present "Glorious Spell of Sobriety", individual project of the Brazilian artist Alice Quaresma

Presenting the most recent unfolding of her research in image construction, the artist ventures into the creation of NFT and also into the digital use for her photographs interspersed with painting.

In 2021 she participated in the Every Woman Biennal project that took place in different locations in the cities of New York and London. Already in its fourth edition, it is the largest biennal of female and non-binary art in the world. On that occasion Alice exhibited her first NFT and was subsequently invited by Tropix to do the launch of the NFT exhibited now.

This work focuses on the idea of the image as a subjective/abstract record, exploring the field of imagination, mixing old techniques, such as 35 mm negatives with digital images and geometries created on the computer. The landscape created is a representation of the current moment, where we go through a process of transition and questioning. Quaresma has always been greatly influenced in his artistic practice by the works of the pioneers of Neo-Concretism, Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica.

Rereading the artistic movement that happened in Brazil in the late 60's, Alice tried to create sensorial and interactive qualities in her works through the use of paint, pencil, adhesive tape and oil stick, creating geometrical interventions on authorial photographs, deconstructing the image and bringing painting characteristics to photography. Now, with the use of digital media the artist inserts visual elements and animation expanding the narrative in the construction of the images.

Alice Lent

Born in Brazil in 1985 and currently living in New York. She has been experimenting with materials that allow her photographs to be sensorial and playful, pushing the limits of photography as a descriptive medium. Using images from her personal archive, she reflects on identity and imagination, stimulating the playfulness in her images.

Quaresma has participated in exhibitions at institutions around the world, such as Patrick Heide Contemporary Art (London), Sobering Galerie (Paris), Félix Frachon Gallery (Brussels), Sotheby's Institute (New York), Centro de Cultura Laura Alvim (Rio de Janeiro), Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, and A.I.R Gallery (Brooklyn). He held his first institutional solo exhibition at Caixa Cultural São Paulo in 2018 and released his first book, "Playground," with French publisher Editions Bessard in 2019. Awards include Photoworks Festive Commission Prize (2021), Aperture Foundation Summer Open Prize (2019), Houston Center for Photography Annual Exhibition Prize (2019), Foam Talent Prize (2014), and PS122 Exhibition Prize (2009). He has also created special projects for various organisations such as Gap, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Hermès, Air France, and Red Bull. His work has been published in Exit Magazine (Spain), Foam Magazine (Netherlands), Extra Fotographie in Context (Belgium), Edicola (Italy), IMA (Japan), Serafina (São Paulo), Lens Culture, and Artsy, among others. Quaresma has a BFA from Central Saint Martins College (London) and an MFA from Pratt Institute
(New York).
