Casa de Cultura do Parque opens a new exhibition cycle with three new exhibitions

The group show 'De Terra e Gás' proposes a dialogue between the works of Germana Monte-Mór, Paulo Monteiro and Solange Pessoa. Luís Teixeira exhibits at Gabinete do Parque and Project 280 X 1020 receives a series by Estela Sokol

Casa de Cultura do Parque, a free cultural centre located in front of Villa-Lobos Park, begins the II Exhibition Cycle of 2021 with three new exhibitions from 27 November, with artistic direction by Claudio Cretti.
Galeria do Parque is hosting the group show De Terra e Gás, with works by Germana Monte-Mór, Paulo Monteiro and Solange Pessoa and text by Tiago Mesquita. The Minas Gerais artist Luís Teixeira is showing the solo show Gargalo at Projeto Gabinete, with text by Tiago de Abreu Pinto, and the 280 X 1020 Project is exhibiting Cucumbers, Sad & Brazilian, a series of 27 paintings by Estela Sokol. The artistic direction is by Claudio Cretti.

From Land and Gas by Germana Monte-Mór, Paulo Monteiro and Solange Pessoa
Germana Monte Mór, Paulo Monteiro and Solange Pessoa - artists who established themselves on the national art scene between the early 1980s and 1990s, with an emphasis on three-dimensional and pictorial research, are part of the group show De Terra e Gás (From Land and Gas), which presents new works from different periods of their careers. Artistic direction by Claudio Cretti, the show is exhibited from November 27 at the Galeria do Parque, as part of the II Ciclo expositivo of the Casa de Cultura do Parque.
Drawing and sculpture are the matrix of the three artists' productions, offering a poetic dialogue between forms, colours and materials that take shape with a certain effort, revealing a rich clash between matter and form. Tending, almost always, to abstraction, they are works loaded with mystery. "They are holes, holes, cocoons, lines and thick and shapeless masses, as if to reveal something that is not there, exhale a gas, make a surprise", comments Claudio Cretti.
With similar trajectories and cross-overs in other moments of their careers, the artistic production of the trio is full of references to emerging cultures in the contemporary scene and to the recent history of art itself, such as Post-minimalism, Italian Arte povera, Brazilian Neo-concretism, without neglecting to look closely at the production of Brazilian popular art.
Influenced by a cultural myriad, the works carry the breaking of the division between spectator and work, between erudite and popular, diluting this inhibition between work and spectator in a corporeal presence of the works. The use of unusual materials, such as asphalt, felt, tin, lead and wax, clay, ceramics, highlights the freedom of experimentation and creation that allows for greater subjectivity and expressiveness.
Bottleneck of Luís Teixeira
Objects and static images in search of movement through a border and narrow passage are the motto of the group of works in Gargalo, exhibition by Luís Teixeira with artistic direction by Claudio Cretti. The individual exhibition takes place from 27 November, at Gabinete do Parque, a space in the Casa de Cultura do Parque that receives works by young artists, and is part of the II Ciclo expositivo of the cultural centre.
The artist from Minas Gerais develops his work through experimentation with different artistic supports, such as painting, sculpture and objects, proposing counterpositions of various natures. For the show Gargalo, he presents a set of 10 works, among them four object-paintings produced in 2019, and six paintings developed between 2020 and 2021.
In common, the group of works shows a kinetic will, creating a notion of bottleneck, in which the static aspects of the work seem to move through a narrow space. The title of the exhibition also refers to the exhibition space that was originally a place of passage from the gallery to the outside area.
For writer and curator Tiago de Abreu Pinto, invited to write the critical text of the exhibition, "Luis Teixeira's paintings allude to a dichotomy: his static condition in contrast to his kinetic desire, this bottleneck in itself is a path, it is movement".
Cucumbers, Sad & Brazilian by Estela Sokol
Paintings made with coloured felt on wooden chassis make up the series loaded with humour and irony Cucumbers, Sad & Brazilian by Estela Sokol. Developed during the period of social isolation imposed by Covid-19, the unpublished work is exhibited in the 280 X 1020 Project, a wall located between the internal and external spaces of the Park's House of Culture.
The set of works is the unfolding of the artist's research on paintings made without the use of paint, appropriating the entire palette of felt colours available in the industry to create a polychromatic game between figure and background. The only rule is the non-repetition of the colour of the fabric that acts as the painting's background in another painting.
Cut-out shapes also made of felt, which characterize the cucumbers, are only positioned on the coated surface of the painting, remaining on the background due to the force of attraction and repulsion that the electric charges exert on each other. The works are constructed from the variation of two to five forms, which operate like a strip painting. "The juxtaposition of forms gains a certain jubilant softness through the still life tone or through the inherent rescue of the silent life of inanimate matter," Estela Sokol points out.
The title of the series makes a direct allusion to the meme Sad & Brazilian, which went viral again on the Internet during 2020, and performs a kind of apology to the cucumber, in reference to the form and popular meaning of the word, which is problem, related specifically to the economic, political and social situation of the country.
