FELIPE YUNG - FLIP OPENS UNPRECEDENTED EXHIBITION IN SÃO PAULO AFTER 10 YEARS
THE EXHIBITION PAREIDOLIA AT BABEL SP BRINGS TOGETHER 8 LARGE CANVASES FROM THE ARTIST'S CURRENT ABSTRACT WORK THAT EMPHASISES THE IMPORTANCE OF NON-WAR
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
PAREIDOLIA is the first solo exhibition that galleria BABEL SP presents by artist Felipe Yung - FLIP. A well-established name on the world contemporary art scene, in recent years FLIP has delved into the concept of pareidolia, a psychological phenomenon of random visual and sound stimuli whereby there is a recognition of images in objects, shadows, light formations and in any other visual stimuli (such as the faces of people, animals, etc.). His search within this panorama goes through the patterns and variations of camouflage, which have always been present in his creations, along with a strong influence of Japanese culture. The phenomenon of pareidolia is subjective, which implies that the reception and association of these images remains on an individual level of subjectivity for each person.
In the presentation, the artist eliminates figurative emotiveness and brings to the eyes a wide abstract recently gained by the daily and intense love relationship with his son who, with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), brought in this respectful relationship the search for understanding and new traits. In this variable, confusing and amusing perception, FLIP approaches fundamental questions about identity and human relations from traces created on the basis of official records of military dress patterns, bringing the questioning of a necessary warning in shades of strong colours, and a clear appeal of NO war. An intuitive reflection latent in these days, and a possible human evolution in pareidolia that today seems to be more distant.
In the exhibition there are 8 large canvases (average of 200 x 300cm) in the main room (1st floor), and in the show room (2nd floor) works from other series with a figurative content will also be exhibited.
Highlight for the installation YUKIMEISAI (snow + camouflage in Japanese language), made from the union of FLIP and Teydi Deguchi, guest artist, in front of the Shibuya Garage, raising the customization of motorbikes and the collection in this segment to the precious state of art. The conjuto of the work has the original soundtrack of DJ Mako.
During the exhibition there will also be the launch event of a new ceramic sculpture. Created in partnership with Rachel Hoshino, it was based on an icon of the Liberdade neighbourhood. The extinct Giboshis are wooden ornaments used to decorate handrails at shrines, temples, and traditional Japanese bridges, being used to protect against evil spirits - they were found on the emblematic Osaka City Viaduct (Liberdade district in São Paulo). In addition to the limited edition of only 20 units, Babel SHOP will have products developed by the artist and related to the exhibition available for sale.
FLIP will be the highlight of the BABEL stand at SP Arte 2022, which in this 18th edition will have 70m2 - stand D6. The fair takes place from 6 to 10 April, at the Biennale Pavilion, Ibirapuera Park.
PAREIDOLIA is supported by VANS + STREETOPIA + TIGRE + URBANLABEL + TINTAS GENESIS + KISU Japanese Cuisine
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Felipe Yung is an artist from São Paulo who has made his name on the streets, where he is better known as FLIP. A master of sprays and marker pens, he has inundated São Paulo for years, perfecting his calligraphy on the city's walls, as the graffiti tradition dictates. But FLIP was also one of the pioneers in Brazil to break this same tradition and paint characters loose throughout the metropolis, giant or small beings, in large numbers, usually with very bright colours. He is highly influenced by urban culture and design (art, fashion and music), native trees, the history of camouflage, by Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) and urban (tags and pixação), and also by woodcuts (Ukiyo-e). You can check his art on the streets of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Madrid, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Moscow, London, Paris, Osaka - Tokyo among others.
He currently lives in São Paulo, is married and is the father of four-year-old Bento.
