LUIZ AQUILA

The Search for Painting

An individual exhibition curated by Claudia Saldanha opens on 15 December and inaugurates the new space of Galeria Patrícia Costa

"Luiz Aquila A Procura da Pintura" lists 15 works by the artist, selected by the curator Claudia Saldanha. The articulation of colours and contrasts through planes and brushstrokes - Aquila's characteristic trait - is manifested in different compositions, with medium and large formats.

"The more we walk in this search for painting, the more it distances itself, as if it were a mirage. Despite its concreteness, which is very matter, form, colour, surface, it also haunts as something that cannot be found. This is what stimulates the artist to paint", says Luiz Aquila.

The exhibition marks the inauguration of Galeria Patrícia Costa's new space, which has doubled in size and now occupies 160m². "We are investing in the strength of the art market. We have gone through moments of many uncertainties, yet we have always kept a positive outlook on the future and the direction we intended to take," says Patrícia Costa.

"This individual exhibition brings together works from different periods that, according to the artist, are like seasons that manifest themselves in different compositions. There are works from the late 1970s - delicate drawings made in quill pen, treated as a painting that invades a drawing - and other more recent ones. Acrylic paintings with visceral gestures and intense colours in large formats," analyzes the curator, Claudia Saldanha.
