Maurício Nogueira Lima: Form and
Colour
Exhibition
brings a set of serigraphs produced by the artist between 1971 and 1995
The USP Contemporary Art Museum presents the
exhibition Maurício Nogueira
Nogueira Lima: Form and Color, with
20 silkscreens from the collection of the Institute named after the artist and a painting from
from a private collection. For Stela Politano, curator at the Maurício Nogueira Lima
Nogueira Lima, "the serigraphs demonstrate the
the maturity of the concrete artist and a moment of greater freedom in the use and development of
and development of his chromatic research". Documents and studies carried out by the artist
by the artist complement the exhibition.
Maurício
Nogueira Lima (1930-1999) was the youngest member of the Grupo Ruptura, which
which brought together geometric abstract artists in the early 1950s in São Paulo.
Alongside Geraldo de Barros, Luiz Sacilotto and Waldemar Cordeiro, he built an
important career as a concrete artist and his works were present in the
Bienais de São Paulo (III, IV and V). In 1960, he was invited by the Swiss Max Bill
to take part in the exhibition of Concrete Art in Zurich. Nogueira Lima
experienced a return to figuration after the coup of 1964, drawing closer to images
images from the mass media. In 1967, he collaborated with the exhibition Nova Objetividade Brasileira (MAM Rio) and
signed the collective manifesto Declaration of Basic
of Basic Principles of the New Avant-Garde.
In the early 1970s
Nogueira Lima turned his research to the optical effects of colour based on geometric
based on geometric abstraction, taking up concrete art as an artistic method and
and artistic principle. "The reproducibility of the artistic object and its democratization,
ideals found in the Paulista concrete manifesto, are experimented with in
his multiple serigraphs", observes the curator. It is also in the 1970s
that the artist turned his gaze to the visual problems of the urban environment in an attempt to
attempt to rethink the space in order to neutralize urban pollution by means of
colour. Many of these studies and projects can still be visited, such as Empena
São Bento (1979) and the linear walls/structures of the metro stations Santana
and São Bento (1990), where some of the same plastic elements can be seen in his
of his serigraphs.
Maurício Nogueira Lima sought the
and multiplication of form and colour, aiming at a social redistribution of artistic creation
of the artistic creation that fascinated him so much, concerned to expand his studies and
and multiplying them among peers, students, teachers, friends and the
the public. In the artist's words, "I concretize, with simple and
understandable forms, the contradictions that exist, in a direct visual and non-verbal language.
verbal visual language. I use the resources I know how to manipulate: shapes and colours."
