Espaço Zagut presents - Carnival 2022: Tribute to Nara Leão
One of the founders of Bossa Nova and MPB in Brazil, Nara Leão, a 20th century music icon who celebrated her 80th birthday in January of this year, will be honoured by artists at the exhibition Carnival 2022: Homage to Nara Leão , at Galeria Zagut, from 10 February.
To celebrate and pay tribute to the artist in the middle of Carnival, the collective, which includes 90 artists, can be seen online, starting February 10.
In the works of the exhibition, Nara Leão, often called the "muse of Bossa Nova" (although she did not like that title), is remembered through her talent, her voice, her feminine value in Brazilian music is recognised, as well as her political positioning in the country, especially during the military dictatorship.
According to artist Marcelo Carvalho Veiga, it was instigating and pleasurable to make a work inspired by Nara, while artist Lucia Lyra says that the image and the song "This look when it meets mine, speaks of things I can't even believe", Carmen Givoni says she was seduced by Nara's voice and her light, free and daring spirit. For the artist Silvana Godoi, Nara is a revolutionary force for women, who breaks standards and questions the limitation to freedom of expression. Olívio Neto transformed what would be the strings of a guitar into the waves of the Copacabana boardwalk. "The colours and shapes used also evoke the song Manhã de Carnaval, sung by Nara Leão," he says. The artist Let Cotrim places in her work the famous little boats of Nara, as well as Abram Alas and the Carnival that insists on making her party.
"And when Carnival arrives in 2022, in February, Nara Leão would have just celebrated her 80th birthday in January. She left us 33 years ago, very young, but already having left her very strong mark both on Brazilian music and on the way of thinking about the role of women in society. I was already a fan since I was a child, my parents had many of her records and especially when I watched the film Quando o carnaval chegar by Cacá Diegues in 72 and then listened to Saltimbancos, she singing the cat's song and years later going to a show of hers with Menescal at People", says Isabela Simões, organiser of the press conference.
