Athena Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Andrew Silva: Apotheosis Branch. The carnival is the central theme of this show and the exhibition space was transformed into an allegorical apotheosis with the representation of pierrô, bathers, confetti, serpentines and many lights. Andrew reproduces in his paintings floats, dancers, and other images taken from magazines of the 1990s, as well as carnival elements, urban landscapes of cars, viaducts and avenues. "Ramal Apoteose" takes us to an end point: carnival. However, Andrew Silva creates his own carnival, from the references that he brings from Bangu, carioca neighborhood where he was born, without ceasing to think of the party as a construction of an idea of collective belonging.
Popular carioca culture is essentially ritual. The arrow of Styrofoam on the chest of the patron saint can be shot, spear, confetti, streamer, bladder, umbrella, drumstick of war box and marking surdo.By the hands of Andrew Silva, it is as the wagon of the light train that travels from what we were in direction to what we are and to what we can be. It was not the street, after all, that invented carnival. It was carnival that invented the street, sacred, bastard, profane, as an apotheosis of joy and prayer.-- Luiz Antônio Simas
