ARTISTIC RESIDENCE PROGRAMME 2021 | INVISIBLE FACES OF IMMIGRATION IN BRAZIL

The Museu da Imigração - an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State Government of São Paulo - will promote, this Saturday (02), as part of the second edition of the Artist Residency Program, the launch of the exhibition "Invisible Faces of Immigration in Brazil", by Angolan artist Paulo Chavonga. The opening will take place at 11am in the room "Hospedaria em Movimento".

The initiative, conceived in 2019, aims to stimulate cultural production, understanding that art can be a privileged expression to make sensitive important concepts for the understanding of migrations. Thus, through calls for proposals, individual artists or collectives of migrant and refugee artists are invited to perform an immersion in the activities and routines of the MI, aiming to develop a visual arts project of various languages.

In 2021, the proposal resulted in the selection of the Angolan artist Paulo Chavonga who, since July, has been present in the environments of the former Hospedaria do Brás complex. During this period, the professional got to know the work done by all the teams and, afterwards, started the creation of three large canvases. The works, which make up the exhibition, will be on display at the Museum until December.

"The Artistic Residency Program aims to bring migrant artists closer to the Museum and, even more, to provide visitors with different analyses and reflections. Thus, the theme presented in this edition, Migrations and the bricks of structural racism in Brazil, converges with this purpose, being primordial to continue with the debates involving racism and the history of the Hospedaria. Because of that, including, were prioritized the candidacies of black and/or indigenous", comments the executive director of the institution, Alessandra Almeida.

After the opening, the in-person and virtual audience will have the opportunity to follow a chat between Chavonga and the professional selected in 2019 and, also, member of the project's Curatorial Commission this year, Emilia Estrada. The conversation will begin at 12pm and will be broadcast live on MI's Instagram profile.

"Through the giant portraits, with testimonials, starring African immigrants as street vendors in São Paulo, I rub the harshness of this service with the dreams they had and have in Brazil. At the same time, I show how structural racism is a determining factor in the territory of hard work, sometimes akin to slavery, in which these people find themselves. With this, I want to bring new faces and stories into the Museum. Faces and stories that can no longer be invisible. An act of courage and desire for dialogue so that perhaps a new look on the African people in Brazil may be born", explains Chavonga.
