Art Week

celebration of the centenary of the 1922 Week of Modern Art

A milestone with importance recognised a posteriori by history and society, the Modern Art Week of 1922 sought and fulfilled the role of breaking the existing link between Brazilian artistic production and European matrices, breaking the ties of art and thus allowing the construction of a primarily national culture.

As a tribute to 100 years of the event, Juliana Monaco exhibits at Art Lab Gallerythe exhibition "Semana de Arte - celebration of the centenary of the Week of Modern Art of 1922"where she shows to the public original works by Anita Malfatti, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti e Tarsila do Amaralthe authors who took part in the exhibition. Antonio PeticovAntonio Peticov, contemporary artist invited, presents a new series of seven paintings, as well as works from different periods of his career in direct language with the Modernists and the Week of 22. Complementing the 300 works on display, 84 artists present works in different media such as paintings, engravings, photographs, sculptures and jewellery.

In 1922, various cultural representations participated in the event, such as dance, music, literature, painting, architecture, sculpture, poetry and lectures. Held at a time of political, social, economic and cultural turbulence, the Modern Art Week had as one of its most important figures, the writer Mário de Andrade who, together with Oswald de Andrade e Di Cavalcantiarticulated and organized the event. The highlights that have endured include the modernists Oswald de Andradein literature, Victor Brecheretin sculpture, and Anita MalfattiShe was responsible for the first Brazilian modernist exhibition, in 1917, where her works, influenced by cubism, expressionism and futurism, scandalized the society of the time. There was no concept that united the artists, nor a defined aesthetic programme. The intention was to destroy the status quo. And they succeeded.

In the words of the curator Juliana Monaco"Writers, painters, sculptors, and musicians thirsting for renewal, shocked the provincial São Paulo elite in a central event for art in the Week of 13 to 17 February 1922 in an exhibition of works with a nationalist predilection and the aim of taking a stand against academicism, against "passadism", as they, the modernists, themselves defended".

A Art Lab Gallery also "revisits the past, reflects the present and discusses new proposals for Brazilian art through the perspective of 84 young artists who participate as historical agents of our Art Week!", explains Juliana Monaco.

The tribute to Villa Lobos is expressed with the presence of a centenary piano in the exhibition space, which is available to the public during the exhibition period.
