Sesc São Paulo opens the exhibition Xilograffiti,

curated by Baixo Ribeiro, in the Consolação unit

The exhibition promotes the meeting of popular and regional artistic languages, such as woodcut and graffiti, and presents artworks by artists and groups such as Derlon, J. Borges, Lira Nordestina, Atelier Piratininga and Lau Guimarães

Exhibition opens on May 4 and includes an intervention on the gable of the Sesc Consolação building, in addition to a space dedicated to the artworks, where various artworkshops and meetings take place, with the participation of the public and the artists

From next May 4th, Sesc Consolação opens the exhibition Xilograffiti, curated by Baixo Ribeiro and featuring popular artworks of distinct origins, which promote the confluence and clash between woodcut and graffiti. The artworks of the artists and collectives present in the exhibition - whose languages and cultural references may suggest more differences than approximations to the collective imagination - present many points of convergence, especially in the many points of convergence, especially in the way they are constructed, in an inclusive, collaborative and participatory manner.

For the curator, "More than artistic languages, xylography and graffiti have become cultural symbols that attract artists and audiences engaged in their perpetuation. Although apparently distant due to their context of origin, both are part of cultures that connect: on one side the gouge grooves the wood of the xylographic matrix, on the other side the stylus cuts the stencil mask; while at the popular fairs the cordel stalls emerge, at the independent graphic fairs the zine stalls emerge; if at the main square there is a duel of repentistas, at the sl slum there is a slam battle".

The public will have the opportunity to encounter a rich artistic and active production, having access to artworks of woodcuts from the Sesc collection, a clothesline with a collection of cordéis and lambe-lambe posters with their matrixes, among others, in an exhibition in movement and construction, where various artworks will be incorporated into the exhibition space individually or collectively until the end of the exhibition visitation, at the end of July.

In the exhibition, the curatorial approach sought to contemplate a diversity with regard to territoriality, techniques, dimensions and processes. With this diversity in mind, the curators also contemplated artists and groups of women in a field with a predominantly male tradition of creation.

Besides J. Borges (Bezerros-PE); Lira Nordestina (Juazeiro do Norte-CE); Samuel Casal (Caxias do Sul-RS); Atelier Piratininga (São Paulo-SP); Turenko (Manaus-AM); Paulestinos (São Paulo-SP); Oficina Tipográfica (São Paulo-SP); Romildo Rocha (São Luís-MA) and Derlon (Recife-PE), are present in the show Xicra invites soupixo, Andréa Sobreiro and Carol Piene (CE); 23rd edition of Armazém Project - Woman Artist Resists (Florianópolis-SC) and Lau Guimarães (São Paulo-SP). The artworks of such artists will be grouped by thematic nuclei.

NUCLEI AND WORKS

- Cordel Raiz: with artworks by J. Borges and Lira Nordestina, this form of independent fanzine is presented, which articulates humour and social criticism printed in wood-typography artworkshops. Artworks by J. Borges, belonging to the Sesc collection, are records of a popular culture with a documental aspect inserted in a certain historical context. His work is trans-historical and fulfills, in this sense, the social function of the work of art. A collection of cordéis produced by the historic Lira Nordestina print shop is exhibited on clotheslines.

- Contemporary Cordel: with artworks of Xicra, Bestas Marginais and soupixo, the Cariri - region that brings together the states of Ceará, Pernambuco, Paraíba and Piauí - is present with the cordelismo updating the original concept of guerrilla zine, printed in xilo or xerox, folded and pamphleted. For the exhibition, there is a collective collage of posters and lambe-lambes, gathering the production of artists who live in the city of Crato, in the Cariri region. In the panel, reverence to the cordel root is present, but there is also an intention to address current issues in a kind of vindication of other visual postures of the contemporary world

- Xilo Urbana: presents the artists and collectives Atelier Piratininga, Turenko and Samuel Casal. The big city is the scenario and independent print shops are the meeting points of the new urban artists. Piratininga brings a collage of lambe-lambes printed from twelve large format matrices, which together form the historic work of the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). The matrices were produced by 26 artists, among new and old participants. The artist Turenko presents a floor mural in linoleum with words and images where urban and Amazonian culture mix. The work is the result of iconographic research, using references from popular culture, pop imagery and indigenous graphics. Finally, Samuel Casal carves at the exhibition site, a wooden wall as a woodcut matrix.

- Lambegrafia: are 23rd edition of the Project Warehouse - Woman Artist Resists and Paulestinos, bringing the element poster as propaganda and art: communicating, explaining, criticizing, informing, mocking or celebrating. The lambe-lambe comes to deconstruct the tradition of the poster, transforming its content in manifestation and poetry. Paulestinos present a collage in large format, composed by poetic lambe-lambes and images that merge references from the "cangaço" and manga, joining the construction of digital images with contemporary visual poetry, while the 23rd edition of the Project Armazém - Mulher Artista Resiste presents a panel with posters produced in various techniques and media that brings together artworks by 100 participating artists, from the invitation of the curator Juliana Crispe.

- Tipograffiti: in the space where Coletivo Oficina Tipográfica and Lau Guimarães are located, the printed letter is the starting point of the journey towards the socialization of knowledge. The letter, the word and poetry are the tools that make humanity face its own limits and manage to overcome them. Through the sequential placement of the most striking and symbolic posters of its typographic production, another panel on display is dedicated to the history of the Oficina Tipográfica São Paulo. In the work of Lau Guimarãeswords are the creation material of the artist's aesthetic narrative, who draws on the stories of passersby to compose her artworks, most of which are placed in strategic places of passage in public space. In a kind of typographic game, in which stencil techniques come together, her artworks gain a new approach when exhibited within the institutional space.

- Xylographic Graffiti: here, Derlon and Rocha are responsible for keeping a look back to the past and remembering that the current creative freedom was conquered by those who paved the way. The graffiti admires the culture of xilo, which synthesises in black and white the direct aesthetics of the counterculture, amplifying voices. O Derlon 's mural is painted directly on a wall and establishes a new graphic dimension to the environment of the exhibition room. The urban scale with which the artist deals provides for the interaction with large internal spaces, creating new architectural situations through the transformation of the wall into landscape. Rocha 's work is a large mural that emerges from the top of the blind gable of the Sesc Consolação building, proposing a dialogue between urban pop culture and the popular culture of the Northeast.

ARTISTIC INTERVENTION AT THE GABLE, WORKSHOPS AND MEETING WITH ARTISTS

The exhibition, which takes place at Sesc Consolação - located in Vila Buarque - will also promote a great intervention on the gable of its building. The unit, inserted in an urban territorial context where the presence of artistic manifestations such as those presented in the exhibition (graffiti, lambe-lambes, posters etc.) is quite common, will receive a painting with monumental dimension by Romildo Rocha, to be held between April 17 and May 3.

Besides the intervention, courses, artworkshops and meetings with the artists will be offered during the period in which the exhibition is on show.
