The Zona da Mata corresponds geographically to the coastal strip of northeastern Brazil, parallel to the Atlantic Ocean, which extends from Rio Grande do Norte to Bahia. A stretch of the original Atlantic Rainforest, now almost extinct in the region, it was fertile soil that was predatorily exploited. Gateway for colonisation, it is historically a territory of conflict, established in the mode of invasion and occupation, matrix of destitution of the original peoples and the Afro diaspora in the country.

This exhibition adopts the term Zona da Mata as a symbolic metaphor, not only in the sense of physical geography, in the necessary confrontation of the challenge of dealing with the violent constitution of our territory. Facing the predatory exploitation of people and places, how to restore dignity to what we need to recognize as our home? It is unavoidable to repactualise our human condition in the inseparable relationship between culture and nature.

In the face of a Brazil in feverish convulsion, violently retrograde, Zona da Mata is today the whole country. Aligned to the world challenge, we need more than ever to reposition ourselves towards our pact as a country and as a society, starting by recognising ancestral knowledge that we did not know how to cherish, without imprisoning it in a historical past, but as a fundamental part of our desirable present.

The exhibition is organized in four parts in different spaces and with different temporalities. For this reason, we are never in front of the whole exhibition, but only of fragments. It takes place at the MAC USP (5th floor, wing B and ground floor) during the whole extension of time and at the MAM (in the glass room in two periods). It takes advantage of the condition of necessary crossing, more agile on foot than motorized, to articulate the two neighboring points, disconnected after the transformation project of Ibirapuera in 1954, where originally there was a flooded forest - "forest that was once forest" in Tupi Guarani. It attempts a coming-and-going adhering to the city's ground, addressed to the present and to the future, in the inseparable pact of a landscape shared and simultaneously diverted, from the vibrant singularity of each invited work and from the collection of both institutions that make up this landscape show.

Starting on October 26th, the exhibition "Zona da Mata", a partnership between MAM and MAC USP, will have a new configuration. Curated by Cauê Alves, Marta Bogéa and Ana Magalhães, it extends until March 2022. In this part IV of the show, artist Rodrigo Bueno presents an unprecedented and immersive installation, entitled Origem e Destino, created exclusively to occupy MAM's Glass Room. The work Origin and Destiny functions as a kind of greenhouse, a dynamic field with cycles of transmutation from natural and artificial elements: such as water, fire, crystals, plants, wood recovered from the streets, voices, and electric light. In this way, it invites the audience to dive into an unexpected and exuberant environment.
