The Casa de Cultura do Parque, a cultural centre located in front of Villa-Lobos Park, establishes a new relationship with the surrounding nature through its new exhibition project On the Deck. The initiative, located on the Casa's external deck, is inaugurated with the installation Lead (figure N⁰3) by Frederico Ravioli, on show from February 19th.
The chosen space is intended to receive installations by contemporary artists, who are able to establish themselves outdoors and dialogue with issues related to the environment, creating interfaces between art, nature and science. "As it is a location that juts out from the Casa, No Deck creates a direct dialogue with the Casa's surroundings, such as Villa-Lobos Park, as well as allowing the works to interact with elements such as the air, wind, earth and rain", states artistic director Claudio Cretti.
For the project's debut, the artist Frederico Ravioli developed a large sculpture, composed of plastic canvas, lead and fan, forming an inflatable that refers to exotic fruits, spermatozoa, cocoons, eggs or a respiratory system. "Lead (figure n°3), is part of a series, they are inflatables that play with relations of opposites and complementations, such as inside and outside, pressure and emptiness, form and deformation, transparency and colour", explains Ravioli.
The artist has been working with plastic canvas and wind since 2016, when, together with other artists, he built a 5-metre high inflatable mouse to take to demonstrations against and for the impeachment of former President Dilma Roussef. Currently, Frederico Ravioli develops air sculptures of giant and eye-catching proportions that are abstract, such as Lead (figure n°3).
The No Deck project's premise is to receive unpublished and specific works for the Casa's space, during a period of approximately two months. Later this year, names such as Laura Belém and Leandro Muniz will take over the space with their open-air exhibitions.
During the opening of the project, an educational workshop that dialogues with the sculpture by Frederico Ravioli, is developed by the coordinator of the educational sector of the Cultural Centre Mayra Oi, from 15h. The activity, aimed at parents and children, does not require prior registration, just show up at the room of the activity.
The Casa de Cultura do Parque continues with three exhibitions from the Ciclo Expositivo currently on show: De Terra e Gás , which brings together works by Germana Monte-Mór, Paulo Monteiro and Solange Pessoa, with an emphasis on three-dimensional and pictorial research; the individual exhibition Gargalo by Luís Teixeira, with objects and static images in search of movement and Pepinos, Sad & Brazilian, which presents paintings made with coloured felt in a series full of humour and irony by Estela Sokol.
