Laboratório de Criação, inspired by TUNGA: Conjunções Magnéticas, immerses the artist in his work through performativity

In the online activity, aimed at adults and children from all over the country and led by art educator Carolina Velásquez, participants are led into a performative state, guided by Tunga's work. Based on this, they relate to the space and selected objects at home

As part of its educational program, Itaú Cultural opens the registration for the Creation Laboratory from February 23. The activity is inspired by the exhibition TUNGA: Conjunções Magnéticas, on display at the organization's exhibition space, extending to Instituto Tomie Othake. Led by the art educator Carolina Velásquez, it is held by Zoom, on Saturdays in March, 5, 12, 19 and 26, always starting at 14h, lasting approximately 90 minutes and interpretation in Libras. Registration, for the 100 places available, should be made through the Itaú Cultural website.

One of the aims of this artistic experimentation workshop is to enable participants to feel that they are actually in the two institutions hosting the Tunga exhibition, by approaching works housed in both spaces. The participants are encouraged to awaken a state of performativity inspired by Tunga's poetics, using objects found at home to make compositions with their own bodies and seeking new ways of relating to themselves and to space.

Carolina Velásquez has a bachelor's degree in arts from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp). She has a post-graduate degree in Contemporary Art Practices from the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP) and a Master in Art Processes, also from Unesp. Her artistic production is based on ancestrality, through the recreation of ritual performances based on native peoples' celebrations.

Tunga: Magnetic Conjunctions

The exhibition, on display on the three floors of the Itaú Cultural exhibition space until April 10, consists of about 300 two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, including works produced since the beginning of his career, when he was 18, until his latest creations in 2015, and items from his studio. They are drawings - which permeate his work throughout his career -, sculptures, objects, installations, videos, performances, artist's notebooks, sketches and materials he used.

This show extends to Instituto Tomie Ohtake, located in the Pinheiros neighbourhood, where the public can appreciate Magnetic Gravitation. Made up of approximately 300 kilometres of metal wires - if they were extended in a single line - the work took part in the 19th São Paulo Biennial in 1987 and has never been reassembled. In addition to the drawings that accompany the work and a maquette, ÃO will also be exhibited there, which can currently only be visited at the Inhotim Institute.
