MASP PRESENTS VIDEO ROOM: MELANIE SMITH

The work 'Fordlândia' shows fragments of the district of the same name
beyond the proposal created by Henry Ford in 1927

1 July to 14 August 2022

Ministry of Tourism and MASP - Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, present, from July 1 to August 14, 2022, the exhibition Video Room: Melanie Smith, in the 2nd basement of the institution. Curated by Leandro Muniz, MASP's curatorial assistant, the show exhibits Fordlândia (2014), a video with fragments of the industrial and natural landscape of the homonymous district located on the banks of the Tapajós River, in Pará. The exhibition is part of the program of the MASP Video Room, which proposes an in-depth study of audiovisual productions in the field of artistic production.

Melanie Smith (Poole, England, 1965) lives and works between Mexico City and London. Her works, in different media, reflect on painting in the history of art and its relationship with the moving image. Her early works illustrate the behavioral characteristics of crowds within the urban environment, while her more recent works extend into the study of modernization processes in Latin America. The artist is interested in fragmented montage, creating filmic and performative experiences that often allude to backstage production.

The work Fordlândia shows the interaction between nature and the architecture of the city and its forms of life that emerged over time. Fordlândia was conceived in 1927 by Henry Ford (1863-1947), a pioneer of the automobile industry, as a factory for extracting latex from rubber trees. The work rules were rigid, with supervision by foremen and entry and exit times controlled by clocks and sirens, in addition to a daily diet based on American standards, such as hamburgers. Such forms of control led to a revolt in 1930, which was harshly repressed by the army.

In the 1940s, the rubber trees, planted too close together, were attacked by pests. Anyway, it was already possible to manufacture synthetic latex in a more profitable way, leading to the closure of the factory in 1945. The workers continued in the district, where they began to develop agriculture and cattle-raising.

In the film, Melanie Smith portrays the daily life of the inhabitants of Fordlândia through free and non-synchronized associations between images and sounds, with the montage of scenes made through the relations of forms, textures and colours, creating a non-linear narrative. For the curator Leandro Muniz, the video, "far from being a denunciation of the absurdities of modernization, shows the modes of sociability that emerged in the city, beyond the attempts of its creator to control it in the early 20th century".
