Paulo Nazareth

The performance and installation work of Paulo Nazareth (1977, Governador Valadares) frequently explores his African and indigenous roots. His ongoing project Cadernos de África is presented as part of the Journal programme: a five-year walk that began in 2013 at his home in a favela near Belo Horizonte, crisscrossing all of Brazil, and subsequently across the African continent from Cape Town northwards. His walk-performance represents a slow, real-time questioning of his own experience and the individuals he encounters on his path, tracing a subtle matrix of connections that links not only people, but communities and shared histories. His installations consist of arrangements of collected items and video works that document his journey. The artist deals with various issues that are usually linked to race, ideology and the unequal distribution of development. His practice is both interdisciplinary and participatory. Nazareth seeks to embody the idea of the artist as connector, decoder and philosopher.

Nazareth's work has been exhibited all over the world.
