Brazilian Printmaking invites to the opening of the exhibition
"The Waters of the Future" engravings by Florence Neal
opening- 13 August 2022, Saturday, 13-17h
"The Waters of the Future is a participatory exhibition with 150 woodcuts printed in the Mokuhanga technique - a traditional Japanese technique of printing with water-based pigments on washi paper.
"The Waters of the Future" will be mounted for the first time in Brazil in August 2022 and will be the first solo exhibition of the artist Florence Neal at the Galeria Gravura Brasileira.
The installation "The Waters of the Future" is based on the artist's interpretation of the responses of the Brazilian and American public to the question: "What colour will the water of the future be?
The answers become visible through the creation of wooden matrices engraved and printed by hand using water-based pigments (Mokuhanga) on Japanese washi paper. Mokuhanga (moku-wood, hanga-engraving) uses the methods of the century-old Japanese engraving technique Ukiyo-e.
The sound installation "Pingos/Ondulação/Corrente" composed by Michael Kowalski was created especially for the installation.
During the exhibition the artist Florence Neal will be in the Gallery to talk to the public and demonstrate the Mokuhanga technique by hand printing her responses. Each participant will receive a "Waters of the Future" brooch designed by the artist. (dates and times to be confirmed).
The project began in 2018 at the Sacatar Foundation 's residency program in Salvador, Bahia. Neal worked at the Itaparica Cultural Centre and the Itaparica Library where, upon the public being asked the question, "What colour will the water of the future be?", the artist elaborated the answers and made them visible through her water-based woodcuts.
The artist is grateful for the support of the Sacatar Foundation for the opportunity to do this project in Bahia.
Special thanks to the supporters throughout the project:
Jule Collins Smith Museum (AL), Five Myles (NY), Keiko Hara (WA), Gravura Brasileira Gallery (SP) and the Corn Center for Visual Arts (GA).
