Waldemar Cordeiro's important phase
is the new theme of an exhibition at Luciana Brito Galeria

"The precision of art is not a precision of craftsmanship, but of meanings, one can build with
rigorous without rigorous contours. Form is neither contour nor enclosure, but relationship."
(Waldemar Cordeiro, 1960)

Waldemar Cordeiro was one of the main agents in the history of Brazilian art, a key figure in the transition from modern to contemporary art, and a precursor of artistic movements such as Concretism and Computer Art in Brazil and abroad. With timeless ideas and concepts, all his artistic production, interdisciplinary, followed a coherent evolution, going through phases of investigation that currently represent milestones within the visual arts in Brazil, such as Figurative, Concrete, Popcrete and Computer Art. Just as important, one of these phases is very little studied and practically unknown to the public: "Intuitive Geometry".

Situated chronologically between the phases of Concrete Art and Popcrete, between 1960 and 1963, the Intuitive Geometry phase gains, for the first time in history, the recognition of its importance with the exhibition "Waldemar Cordeiro: Intuitive Geometry", at the Luciana Brito Galeria. While the Concretist phase (Dec. 1950), which was based on the renewal of the values of the visual arts and of the creative process, following a Constructivist aesthetic appeal, worked with primary colours (yellow, red and blue) and precise geometric lines, Waldemar Cordeiro's Intuitive Geometry also kept the same spatial organisation of the canvas, but left aside the ruler and compass to adhere to drawing and to free colours, that is, the primary colours combined to reach other shades, such as those added to white or black, or mixed together.

Both researches, the Concrete and the Intuitive Geometry, combined colours in spatially organized compositions to directly reach the viewer's innate perception. According to Gestalt principles, the whole is more important than the parts, being the complete set of the composition what will engage the senses of the observer, who understands the information through levels of interpretation, from the first visuality to our own emotions and repertoires. To these concepts, which had already been studied by Concretism, Waldemar Cordeiro's "Intuitive Geometry" associated, in an unprecedented boldness, the typically Brazilian chromaticism in the abstraction. The tonal variations that reflect the climate and luminosity typical of tropicality, such as pinks, greens, oranges, purples, yellows, etc., were combined on the oil paintings by means of strokes that were often inspired by the morphology of Brazilian plants, another interest of Waldemar Cordeiro, who at that time was already studying the native plants of the Serra do Mar. Totaling more than 30 works, in addition to the paintings from the series "Intuitive Geometry", the show brings together a set of rare drawings made by Waldemar Cordeiro to illustrate his botanical research, establishing a direct dialogue with the landscape scene itself created by Burle Marx, present in the gallery's modernist space.

Waldemar Cordeiro dedicated his life to an art accessible to all, seeking a collective sense that aligned technology, design and landscaping, always associated with a social and political concern. His legacy broke paradigms and transformed the way of seeing and making art in Brazil, incorporating content and objectivity. What few consider, however, is the importance of the "Intuitive Geometry" phase in bringing concepts pertinent to a typically Brazilian visuality to abstraction, a fact that positions him as the great pivot in the transition to contemporary art in Brazil.
