Exhibition "Ponto Zero" | Individual Exhibition by Rodrigo Braga

As is characteristic in the artist's work, complex and profound themes are approached between density and poetic delicacy, always with beautiful symbolic and visual games that induce reflection. Braga builds diffuse narratives, with high subjectivity, without a clear destination, but at the same time precise as an artistic commentary in relation to what aflige and inspires him in the world. "We plaster our feelings and intelligences. We go back to carrying, or being, stones. The stone as origin, as man's return to his point zero," he comments. Thus, among rocks, sticks and coals, the solitary man searches for any meaning. It is in this scenario - where he holds with his hands rocks that look more like fossil eggs - where the slightest hope hovers

If throughout his career the artist has traversed humid and showy landscapes, often bringing vegetation and animality to the heart of his discussions, in his most recent production he presents a universe of arid fields, where minerals and greys predominate. And as a metaphor for the polarizations of our time, the reduction of the colour palette to predominantly black and white reveals the dichotomies and contradictions present in the ideological field, highlighting the contrasts that separate people, groups and nations.

"Again we evoke the archaic colour palette of lime, like the walls of the fortresses of the past. And all we know now is that we are no longer modern. We then recognise the caves, the holds of the slave ships or the interior of the charcoal works, but, paradoxically, we do not mind carbonising our history. We thus observe our most barbaric origins, as we soon assume our most animal archetypes", he comments. In other words, the axis of the artist's concerns remains the same: the human species, its relationships, its contradictory ways of interacting with the environment.

The very manner in which the artist conceived the arrangement of the works in the exhibition space of the Zipper Galeria brings the theme closer to rock formations. The pieces are found in accumulations, the layers are superimposed. The works are finally susceptible to the dynamics of the world, and to the metaphors of weathering, sedimentation, metamorphosis, rolling and outcropping.

"Ponto Zero", Rodrigo Braga's first solo show at Zipper Galeria as a represented artist, opens on March 5 and runs until April 2, 2022.

Debate with critic Eder Chiodetto

On March 9, at 7pm, Zipper Galeria promotes a meeting between the artist and critic Eder Chiodetto. Curator specialized in photography, Eder is a profound connoisseur of Rodrigo Braga's work. Both will discuss the themes present in the series "Ponto Zero" and their relations with contemporary production. The meeting is open to the public.
